  1. I used to date Lorraine pascale. (Before she started making cakes)
  2. Must say though Heritage makes spending scarily easy. Where else could I spend this amount with one click on the iPhone watching the auction at home and a cup of tea. .. What a auction site. Someone show Spink...
  3. Heritage is lifting the UK coin market towards USA prices that are based on encapsulated coins only in a much much bigger and commoditised market. This can work to your advantage if you have the right coins already and ready to sell. Else you're in trouble. I'm missing out now on new coins I'm interested in now too. Bugger.
  4. Ok so the use of liver pennies may have have been used more frequently by the higher class Vikings/Saxons. Still does not answer why there weren't larger denomination coins. How many pennies would be needed to buy a longboat or pay for larger projects..Hundreds and hundreds?
  5. Ok! Makes sense. So pennies were used for smaller specific transactions?
  6. Very interesting! I guess though my question is more about how much you could buy with a penny and no larger denominations. How would you buy a boat or house with single pennies?
  7. My turn for a silly question. I've always wondered why the York Viking money (and I suppose most Anglo Saxon money) comprised mostly of very small silver pennies??
  8. I got my copies here in oz. Must say though that all the coins look way over graded, or is that the Heritage bright photos playing tricks?
  9. Any chance of sharing these 2 coins? Love to see them.
  10. I'd say it's more about authenticity of a coin with the growing number of more skilled forgeries flooding the market.
  11. You're going to sell them one day.
  12. I'd crack em out nonetheless. The coin won't lose its provenance just because of a bit if plastic with some writing...
  13. Goodness Angela. From what I've gathered there is a chance this may be authentic. Take it to a top level reputable dealer like Spinks and get it appraised and valued for insurance purposes immediately. If genuine you have a rare relic worth 30-50k GBP. (Worth insuring right!) Good luck.
  14. Yes, I guess so. It was probably a loose arrangement. There weren't many of us around then and probably would take just about anything we could get our convict hands on!
  15. The first real Australian coin was the holey dollar and dump of 1813. Prior to this all coins were from other countries used in the early settler days of Australia- proclamation coins. A proclamation by the Governor of Australia on November 19th 1800 that PHILIP GIDLEY KING made was that the following were legal tender : £ s. d. A Guinea … … … 1 2 0 A Johanna … … … 4 0 0 A Half-Johanna … 2 0 0 A Ducat … … … 0 9 6 A Gold Mohur … … 1 17 6 A Pagoda … … … 0 8 0 A Spanish dollar … 0 5 0 A Rupee … … … 0 2 6 A Dutch guilder … 0 2 0 An English Shilling … 0 1 1 A Copper coin of One Ounce. 0 0 2
  16. No purchases for me this time. Had my eye on that beautiful Mary groat... So pretty. Also those commonwealth shillings from the gentlemens collection had some really nice examples, but not 3-4k nice. Any thoughts on the 1905 hcrown 5k hammer..bargain?
  17. Good if you're buying in GBP or USD
  18. I've got a few of my English Queens in the GB Gold section from the top shelf..
  19. I saw this one. I'd like a new copy.
  20. I'm looking for North 2. Galata out of stock. Others don't ship to oz..any ideas?
  21. I like eagle 2*2" plastic holders with Mylar inserts. You can buy them directly from them in the US: https://www.eaglecoinholders.com/new/catalog/index.php?cPath=49_56 Mylar holds the coin in place without movement (preventing any wear) and is long lasting and acid proof.
  22. Leave about 2-3 mm to view the outside of the rim... There are 3 sides on a coin you know...
  23. Wonder if I can trouble someone in helping me find a listing of the fine silver Edward VI shilling die varieties. Looked in BNJ, but no details of portrait and reverse types. Nick
  24. I picked up the EVI Shilling from Spink. Nothing left to spend with for St James/Knightsbridge. (Sad emoticon) What did you win at St James? Nick
