A "rear" hammered [sounds fun for a virgin queen] queen elizabeth the first 1562 silver coin "with the sheild on other side" [well we'd better have that one then!] in good condition for its age the pictures ive put on are poor but the markings on both sides are easy to see and would look good in a "coin collectors collection" [indeed it would!].

The first 2 coins in this link actually have a rainbow running through them ... am I imagining things or has this got too ridiculous for words?Utterly speechless! This is crap then. Colours are all over the place. The sky is blue with a big patch of yellow - whatever next? And the sea really is the Red Sea. Naughty old Peck and the dirty vicar from Tewkesbury for doctoring this coin long before it became fashionable. Another Turner on the back of that old coin! I couldn't 'connect' with your last acquisition, but this one is fabulous, a really pretty coin, it has great 'balance'!I can't grade hammered at all, the variables are just too great to calculate a numerical value which, so called, defines a coin's overall quality! It can be such a small thing that rockets the eye-appeal heavenwards and, it's in that zone, that there is no grade, just a beautiful historical item such as your's! Nice one, you must be extremely pleased with it!

Yes, my top bid was over hammer, so very pleased to get it cheaper, especially as my bid was cheeky in the first place! Edit: the reserves were a little silly! £120 reserve for my lot, which was won at £660 with juice! I think that was really cheap for a rare-bust Liz shilling from an old collection!

Looks less dramatic when face-on (what happened to the other images?), die fill or post mint damage, nothing significant really! Keep looking, and keep posting!

For it to be a blockage, you'd be looking at an ultra-ultra-hardened 'ridge' of metal being perfectly aligned up the vertical of the die's T! Edit: the vertical component of the T looks wider, and the curvature/angle beneath the left horizontal also looks reduced, suggesting post strike damage, rather than die deformity! You'll probably find a 'folded' edge along the left edge of the vertical, the shadow also suggests this?

They have been very good with invoices in the past. Generally posting the day after the auction by 1st class post and so I guess it will be tomorrow or Saturday at the latest. I didn't bid this time but had a look at the realised prices of some lots. Many of their estimates are way below hammer prices. Look like that's the norm with them. Ahh, OK, I'm waiting on an email invoice...I guess the post is more 'proper' like!I agree, their estimates are way below, I think they mostly are...but their hammer prices are generally rather agreeable IMHO

Thanks all, think you are right - an optical illusion, looked very real in hand I agree there is a very slight difference with respect to alignment with border beads, see exergue line and sea behind Britannia - nowt of real significance though, possibly slight difference in overall size of britannia, suspect reduction processes produced slight variations You must be due to find a biggie!

Agreed but, taking a closer look at the point 5 beads down from the tip of the toe, does the bottom (straight) line of the waves pass over the bead in one image, and into it in another? Of course, grade would be king in verifying that, but could be something for those with lots of pennies and penny experience to verify or reject!

Maybe I'm just unlucky with the Spink's guide then as, whenever I see something at auction that I really want, just for me, which isn't often, it always sails WAY over the Spink guide!

Just as a point of interest, I wonder where Spink's is gathering its data from to catalogue the Low-Tide Penny at £175 EF and £325 UNC?
