  1. Someone I know did that a few months ago. A few hundred quid had mounted up over several years, and most of it was paid back. I found it on the site Peter mentioned, I think, or a dedicated fee-combating site anyway.
  2. I'd say Fine at the most, but it's quite hard to tell from the photos. Most of Victoria's hair is worn smooth and detail from Britannia's legs and breast has gone.
  3. This looks like a really good little book, the layout is super. Small query (as always!), the book has F.D. translated as "Fidelis defensor", but I always thought it was "Fidei defensor". Might just be some bad grammar on my part. I'm open to correction from a superior Latin scholar! Edit: P41, 1995 Dove £2 commemorating 50 years since the end of [blank]. Also, some coins listed with "piefort"; I thought it was piedfort, but I've googled it and it seems both are acceptable. You learn something new etc etc.
  4. There's a typo when you open the page. At the top of my browser it says "BRIRISH PETITION CROWN". Excellent site though, very informative!
  5. I didn't think there were any other dedicated British coin forums! Have I been living under a stone? Colin Cooke website has a forum: http://www.colincooke.com/forum.html Although I wouldn't say it was as interactive as this one. I recall Cooke's was always a bit slow. Very good content when posted, just took a bit long to percolate through. Edit: Just looked at it now and it seems to be quite busy nowadays!

  7. Just seen a picture of the cover of this year's on eBay. I think it's quite good! Don't know if anyone has got it this year...any big developments?
  8. I haven't heard anything specific but by that logic it sounds reasonable.
  9. You often have French in your signature and I'm sure you mentioned it before! I know that you collect German 3mk coins. Ah yes the French in my signature; the French version of "I have other fish to fry" is "I have other cats to whip" which I found quite amusing.
  10. Don't know where you go that from, Chris, I'm much more into German stuff: half of my family comes from there! France still has a boatload of colonies left; springing to mind are French Guiana like you said, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and then French Polynesia and a ton of little islands dotted around. These tend to be split into departments as in France, so therefore use the currency. I'm certain for the first three that they use the Euro, not sure about the rest.
  11. TTT this has fallen a bit behind.
  12. Is each county distinct enough to warrant its own coin? Travelling across America it's like going through lots of different countries: I don't think Britain is like that. Perhaps another series akin to the the one pound coins bridges would be a good idea - redesign of all the reverse heraldry perhaps?
  13. There are a few hammered buffs on the forums, hopefully they'll spot this one!
  14. It can be a bit of a hog if it's being pushed. Saying that, it can be even if it's not.
  15. I switched to Firefox a couple of years ago, and would never go back to IE. So far I've converted several of my friends. I like the ease of use, and the amount to which you can personalise it with the "Add ons" such as the range of different search engines, enhanced tabbed browsing etc. Just shows how good it is when Microsoft released IE7 with many of the Firefox features. For anyone who is interested...
  16. That's where I saw quite a few coming from. I tend to click on "Today's Active Topics" at the bottom and noticed that the British bit was getting quite a few more than other sub-forums. It's quite a bind deleting them from the active topics page so I go into the sub-forum itself and use the check boxes at the side. It would be nice if such boxes could be added in the active topics page, but I don't know if the board software supports that.
  17. I imagine Jon will have the 1/2d if he is around. Try PMing him. Edit: Jon a.k.a Half Penny John
  18. For want of an ancients expert to come along, the closest I could do was Wikipedia to give you a rough date.
  19. I wouldn't necessarily say that, but I haven't heard of either any prolific British collectors nor numismatic "experts" living in Utah!
  20. Wonder why they don't quote this on the site? I also echo scottishmoney's comments.
  21. Just look at the "Useful Links" page...
  22. It has begun. The news section makes for disturbing reading too; they have apparantly graded their 1000th coin on a - would you believe it - 100 point grading scale.
  23. They're worth face value really, nothing more. By all means spend them, or you could give them to children to spark off an interest...
