  1. It's definitely Gouby obverse A with Reverse B
  2. I will ask him next Thursday if he recalls the blue boxes.
  3. I was speaking with an 88 year old coin dealer earlier today and the subject of 1951 crowns was discussed. This dealer told me that he got married during the Festival of Britain celebrations in London. He explained to me the reasons for the two different colour boxes that the Crowns were issued in, Green & Magenta. The Green boxes were sold only in the Festival Hall, The Magenta boxes were sold in the Festival Pleasure Gardens on the opposite bank of the Thames.
  4. I won a 1873 coin from the USA for ~$76. It cost me an extra $15.55 shipping and a further $20.54 import charges, Totalling $112. These figures are probably given by US Ebay through their secure posting system. It is no fault of the seller, but if the import charge is wrong, I don't see what could be done about it. Perhaps this situation should be sorted out before buying coins for thousands of dollars !
  5. It's a Freeman 29, obverse 6 with reverse D Yes John, the other picture, I didn't see, appears to be a Freeman 20, obverse 2 with reverse G
  6. It's a Freeman 29, obverse 6 with reverse D
  7. Hello Loose54, With just marginally better Obverse pictures it would make it easier to make an accurate assessment.
  8. Before buying a QX5 or later model, make sure that they are compatible with your operating system. My QX5 will not work on Windows 8/10. This compatibility should also be a part of the discussion.
  9. The only true cameo penny that I was convinced of, was a picture of a rare proof 1961 penny. Unfortunately it sold for much more than I was prepared to pay for it.
  10. Definitely no "H" ! https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Great-Britain-1882-NO-H-One-Penny-Queen-Victoria-HOLLED-NO-RESERVE/272917120131?hash=item3f8b20c483:g:iVIAAOSw5gFZdPkn
  11. Not at all ! Weightman I would consider, but not Alfred Ernest !
  12. I have a possible explanation but could be wrong ! Many early proofs were struck in very low numbers so were produced on a hand press. I believe that they were pressed more than once, sometimes causing a doubling of the strike. In the USA I believe such coins are described as double dies.
  13. Where can it be viewed please ?
  14. He failed to mention two in the Queens collection and one used as a coin weight to govern Big Ben.
  15. A collection of currency pennies would not be considered complete without having all dates. Possibly penny collectors have a different mind set to the public at large.
  16. If you were comparing £9K in 1969 with house prices, It would be more like £750K now !
  17. My original entry was bidding to discourage the seller from pulling the coin and selling it to someone making an offer. I have noticed that this happens a lot. I won't make a habit of identifying rarer coins on ebay, but this was a one off as an example of the type of coins that get pulled from auctions and possible ways of stopping this happening. I don't generally bid on coins that I have an example of in my collection, but do go for the "Buy it now" when they are a bargain ! As some of you have mentioned that you have managed to buy rarities that have been little recognised, I will not bid on any auction coins that I don't require for my collection, but as I have said before, I advise you to make a bid within the first days of an auction to show your interest.
  18. Hello Jerry, I don't know which coin you are referring to, but as I said, any rarity that appears on ebay is almost certainly going to be recognised by all other variety collectors. When bids arrive in the last 5 seconds bidders that putting their wishes on others missing it, are in most instances disappointed. You stand a much better chance of winning coins if you bid what you would pay a dealer for the coin.
  19. There is a uncommon penny in the ebay.uk auction site. I have placed a bid on it hoping that it won't get pulled. Nearly every time a rare coin appears on ebay it gets withdrawn. The possible reason for this could be that the coin appears to have little interest because of bidders habits of not bidding to the last minute. I suspect that the sellers get offers to buy before the auction ends. I have no intention of winning the coin that I mention but hope that collectors wishing to own the coin for their collection get a fair crack at it. The expectation of hoping that know one else will recognise the rarer coins is ridiculous, so my advice is to believe that many people will immediately recognise the variety and place a bid, even if a low bid, just to show your interest.
  20. I suspect that it must have been minted on January 1st or 2nd ??
  21. I bet if this penny was dated 1861, they would not have miss identified the die pairing !! http://www.ebay.com/itm/GREAT-BRITAIN-Victoria-1860-AE-Penny-PCGS-MS64RB-SCBC-2954-Freeman-16-5-D-/182568770366?hash=item2a81f25b3e:g:6LYAAOSwurZZE0pE
