  1. To be fair, Dave, he's only saying the portrait is GEF. Shame it isn't the big crown though!Could do with higher resolution images, really. A lesser mark, but not excessively so, I'd have thought...not that I know anything of value about J1! What you want Dave is this...a genuine unrecorded obverse on this 1564 3d of Elizabeth! I spoke to Chris Comber and he concurs with my thoughts that this obverse was an unused (we think) die from 1561/62. The rusty die, unclogged bust, and Rose 5 supports this theory. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Unrecorded-Obverse-Elizabeth-I-1564-3d-Threepence-Bust-3F-Reverse-BCW-BA-h-/231504730087?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35e6c1d7e7 Also a very rare Bust 3F Cross-Crosslet Halfgroat scheduled for the weekend too! We Or certainly i don't buy On portrait alone. The attached Coin was graded as XF. And i don't see The ebay One being half a grade better I agree Dave, but XF sounds like an American grade for EF (is that right?) so might only be GVF in the UK? So difficult to grade hammered I think, I rely on eye appeal so much more. I prefer it to the CC coin you first posted either way, it has a nice 'balance' You are right Paulus. EF and XF are the same grade in the USA. EF is extremely fine, and XF is extra fine...but they are recognized as the same grade.
  2. Happy Birthday! Soon you'll wonder how you had time to go to work David is right...there just aren't enough hours in the day, when you are retired! Have a great "milestone" 65th Birthday!
  3. I looked at both pictures and nothing registered as unusual. My brain was fixated on grade, rather than the king's effigy itself. I noticed that the obverse was different, but I'm a American, what can you expect! Ha,Ha!
  4. The Obverse is "Fine", and the Reverse is "About Fine - Fine". Thus the coins as a whole would probably grade "Fine"...IMHO..
  5. The "R" along with some of the other letters, have light dirt around them....
  6. I should have also noted Colin...it has a Matt like finish, no luster. It is a very attractive coin, it just has a odd coloration...
  7. I have a 1844 Penny that has a really odd coloration, it is more of a Red / Orange coloration, than the normal Copper Color of the YH series. Does anyone have any idea what might of caused this different color. I thought maybe it might have been plated or something...is that a possibility? The color of the coin, is even more Red / Orange than the pic's show. NGC wouldn't slab it because they said it had a altered surface, but as you probably know, NGC is wrong a lot of the times, with English Coins...
  8. Really nice Penny Prax. Good purchase!

  13. While I was touring Scotland, I had a cabbie drive me out to your shop, only to find out you were closed. It was about 10am in the morning. Sorry I missed you.
  14. Link Topcarp2...that is John Jerrams!
  15. A recent acquisition...1860 BB/TB Mule Penny, F-8. Not the best copy in the world, but rare never the less.
  16. Happy Birthday to all three! Many Happy Returns of the Day!
  17. Goom, The coin listed with London has a pronounced "dot" on the obverse (under the ear, and below the hair)...I would think that would be a sure way of telling if it is the same coin!
  18. The President of the Muncie Indiana Coin Club (Lee Sanzo), attends a Spring and Fall dig in Great Britain, sponsored by Pete Welch, each year. Lee said he had attended digs in the same geographical area where these coins were found...but obviously did not have nearly this kind of luck! Ha.Ha!
  19. HNY Bob Don't you head South for Sunnier climes after Xmas.? I'm self employed and often burn the midnight oil. Predecimal keeps me going. OK Mrs Peter kicks me up the Arse sometimes. I usually go to the two big coin conventions (in the warmer climates) in January, one in Orlando, FL, and the other in Long Beach, CA...but this year my wife has been ill, so we are staying close to home. We will bring the New Year in with the New York, Times Square TV presentation! . btw...Predecimal is always on my radar also! LOL!
  20. Happy New Year Peter, and to All, from across the pond!
