A lot of people who join are only here for a 1 coin related question and when they have their answer you never see them again. As Rob says, there is about 40-50 people who do regularly post, my guess would be there's maybe 100 perhaps more who contribute, albeit intermitently.

It doesn't appear to be any better than Fine, so that would be about the £50 quid mark. So we're totally in agreement then on grade....................Is it genuine Paulus?

I have A 1854 plain trident,were gratia looks like it is over stamped,im wondering if it's a/v I don't think it is realy its just a thought, allso the date looks like it's been stamped twice. Its a fairly common occurance for the Victoria Copper Pennies. The dies were touched up many times, hence you see so much doubling on the legends.

Picked this up today while at the Numismata coin fair in Munich. I took it over to the Baldwin table after getting it and asked what they thought. The older guy who was obviously the boss took a good look and was a little nerved by the 5 in the date, so i'm poppong it on here for 24hrs before i head back tomorrow with some pictures for the old guy at Baldwins, he simply stated that it's hard to tell without a scoped picture, so here it is for you gents first of all. Opinions appreciated as usual.

I think the only silver pennies (and Fourpence and Twopence) issued during George VI's reign were maundy issues. Mintage for Maundy money is always pretty low, there's some mintage figures and indicative values (for the sets) here, but I don't know how up-to-date this is: http://www.maundymon...6064/14115.html According to this the mintage for the 1938 set was 1,275 pieces. BTW the coin will be 50% silver, not sterling (92.5%), as maundy money was debased along with the rest of our coinage in 1921, though was restored back to sterling silver in 1947 when silver was removed completely from our circulating coinage . Hope this helps! Sorry, I've just read your post again, you've said it has Britannia on the reverse (which the maundy penny doesn't) - I don't know of any British silver penny of 1938 with Britannia on it - sounds more like a 19th century groat! Is it British or a colonial coin? Or it could be a Penny that someone has had dipped in silver. Silver would weigh more if genuine, get it weighed and let us know.
