  1. Don't ever remember see a New Zealand panny in circulation, I only have a few - Damn! Ebay search needed S Africa reared it's head though - they're nice pennies well struck, not like the horrid Aussie roos
  2. Happy Birthday! ;):PB)
  3. No colon dots after F:D. Peck 1623a, Gouby 1860 Type T. Took me ages to realise though. And for completion Satin 19, Not listed by Freeman Gouby has it at R9 4 known (now 5!) Fair £100, Fine £250, VF £600, EF £1000+ David
  4. Yes I know the problem. As a kid, I nagged folk to save their bun pennies from change; a side effect living in the then thriving port of Liverpool, I got given a lot of foreign pennies too - they all need completing Australian pennies probably won't ever be completed, but Ireland penny and Argentine 2c done, but still 4 missing from the complete run of French bronze 10c, and ..................... david
  5. If you bid 25 Euros it did not get through as I bid €22 and the next bid was €253!!!! I ony spotted it at 1min to go, and i attemped a snipe €25 to bid at 3 secs to go, maybe I was too late or it went in after than the €253. Was gobsmacked when it finished
  6. Wow! Hows that for last minute bidding! My €25 snipe didn't stand an earthly 1860 with missing colonafter F:D
  7. Spot on! I completed the date set of bronze pennies 40 years ago, culled from circulation and mainly in lousy condition. Upgrading and looking for varieties within the date series keeps me interested, and yes, I know damn well I'm never going to complete Freeman, let alone Gouby David
  8. Nah! The real challenge now is to get all the Gouby variants within each Freeman number David
  9. Probably true, and being in possession of each of the business types, I would say that these are the kind of variety that cure my insomnia! The differences are minute and consist of nothing more than letters pointing to teeth or gaps and not much else. I'm sorry if it's anybody's 'thing' but if all varieties were like this I'd collect bottle tops. Agreed1, I have all three types in decent grade, but differences are minor and very uninteresting. The 99+ variations of ship halfpennies leave me cold too, not really enthused by anything post george V
  10. It's a recognised variety for those of us who like such things, very rare, a specimen (graded as Fine and said to be finest known) sold for £700 here James Workman sale My example cost 45p on Ebay, which is why it's worth looking hard at the crap for certain dates David Why is the finest known only F?...nice one on the 45p coin....I've bought a few coins of which I was quite smug with...and even a few off dealers lists...a 1849 farthing in GVf for £6 ...he wasn't a farthing buff....I will have to through my sack full of pennies to see if there anything rare. Presumably cos no one has yet found a higher grade example Those of us that collect varieties have to put up with whatever grades we can get. Davuid

  13. super 1918KN Classic British Coins again This guy really can find the goodies!! First time I've seen the bird's foot in top grade, suspect it won't finish at 99p David
  14. I'm the same, the only windows in my house face due east and due west. I'm getting reasonable results from my scanner, great for variety checking but my images are definitely flat . Roll on Summer, for good light, Now I've virtually retired I can give my copystand a try out with the digital camera David
  15. Neat! I must try that
  16. My cassette of the Hobbit always evoked the message "Bad block at 6F - rewind tape" , tnen another 10 minute wait Best machine I ever had was my Archimedes, but add ons were just too expensive Back in 1986 I bought a 286 Tandon AT for work for £1000, plus another £1000 for a 100MB hard disk. We marvelled at it saying "We'll never fill that!" David
  17. Don't know what lighting he's using, or whether he has the colour temperature on his camera mis-set; but if you turn down the magenta in his pictures, they don't look bad
  18. 20p!!!
  19. There was rampant inflation at the time, many blamed decimalisation, but figures show inflation was lower in the period post February than during the preceding period. Folk in Europe blamed the introduction of the Euro for rising prices. Don't know whether the figures backed this up, or it was again a way of expressing annoyence at the change David
  20. Ditto! I used to borrow 10/- off my Mum if I was going out for the night David
  21. Wow! Is it really that long ago. I was in Oxford then, and I remember deliberately getting the bus the bus to work (it was only 3 stops and I usually walked) so that I could get some of the new coins in my change. I also seem to recall that Lsd disappeared incredibly quickly I find youngsters gobsmacked at just how large pennies and halfcrowns were
  22. Euro coins a bit confusing but lots of info including die varieties
  23. Spanish coins 1474 to 1868 in Spanish but useful
  24. Portuguese coins nice site
