Then there's sellers who have higher quality coins I'm looking for, but on top of charging high sums, feel the best way to show off a coin is laying it in their greasy hand. I might even consider the high price tag, even with the carbon spot, but how have they decided handling these coins like this is appropriate? Especially aggravating when it's a tough coin to find in higher grades, like this 1934 penny. This seller has several 1934s, all mishandled similarly, and priced at over £200, yet I can't find other copies this nice, but I can't justify spending this, since it'll likely arrive all oily and printed up. I use telegram a fair bit, but for topical discussions like this, forums are superior... or would be if most people hadn't stopped using them. But case in point, I'm a recent member, because I feel forums are the best format for hobbies, and the like.

it gets tiresome to dig through crap, when I specifically use search queries like (unc, bu, uncirculated, ms), and yet I still get greeted by pieces which are listed as "bu gem stunning", but look like someone took steel wool to it. I'm not trying to disparage any dealers validity, or anything, I have a lot to learn, but this thread confirms more what I thought bronzed proofs typically looked like, so with that said, I had wondered about these two 1806 proofs (these do not have imperfect 1 and 0, obv), as they looked less like I thought bronzed proofs might. Granted photos can dramatically alter coin appearances, but curious on others' thoughts. I'm just trying to learn, so pardon the ignorance. I'll upload across a couple more comments, as site's being finicky.

Follow up question, @secret santa, is the distinction between P1326 and 1327 going to be discernable by assuming the bronzed ones will have darker chocolate fields, generally? I suspect I own the copper, not bronzed, but looking to verify. I'll try to upload pics, but often max out beyond constraints... I was able to get one up, which hopefully suffices, but can try to compress other images without destroying purpose of uploading them. Thanks again for your input.

The 1806 pennies with imperfect 1 and 0 -- 1 missing the base, and 0 open at top -- are only to be found in proof issues, not currency, is that correct? Just clarifying for my own records. Thanks.

Something I never quite figured out is why the George III penny 'fourth issues' are named thus? What am I missing besides the 1806-07, and cartwheel issues, other than several silver maundy issues? Or is it a scope larger than pennies, referring to SOHO issues, more generally? Thanks for helping set me straight.

I'm no longer on FB, but I remember the period prior to the formation of groups. FB never had a great search function, as it wasn't tailored at the outset to function as forums do. Nonetheless, FB largely killed forums of all types (for all my varied interests), sadly. Even with the creation of groups on FB, they never replaced the wealth of knowledge present in forums. I wouldn't be upset had they been used as a side means of posting sales/trades, since they do that well, but the fact forums all suffered, many to the point of folding, no longer hosted, it's disheartening. When I was on FB I ran some groups and tried adding 'notes' and 'files' and pinning informational topics, etc., but it still wasn't the same as a good old forum. But now hardly any activity happens in forums, so while older information is housed on them (if they're still hosted), it isn't necessarily current. I wish I had an idea how to draw people back, but I don't know that it's feasible, any more than getting numbers of people back on irc or in bulletin boards. Telegram (TG) and Discord may offer some more possibilities, perhaps, but layout still offers less than some aspects of forums, but more likely to entice groups of people. I personally use Telegram regularly, maybe a predecimal TG group could be tried out.

Hi I didn't bid on this ebay (USA, where I'm located) item strong enough to win, sadly, but i think i found a 6/6 in this 1862. I sent the ebay link to Richard, of PennyVarieties, back in August, after the auction ended. He responded with "Well spotted. Looks like a repair to the 6 as none of the other numerals are doubled. Haven't seen this one before." It's now just past 90 days, so I don't believe I can pull up the original picture in my laptop to download thd seller's pictures vs the screenshot. Since I didn't win, I won't be able to offer much else, picture-wise (plus my filesize limit required cropping). It was a fairly pitted specimen, albeit with many details remaining on both sides. I'll see if I can post more of the full obv and rev in comments, if that may be of interest.
