  1. No experience with them myself Peter though Dad had several Renaults and was happy with them all. Certainly preferable to insuring the MG anyway! Oddly, when daughter was starting to learn we asked our insurers (Direct Line) about her driving our Skoda. They just said 'no' It's not even the VRS version, just a modest 1.4 TSi wtf? Anyway, she's in France now, so driving is no longer a priority at the mo.
  2. Mmmm ... Thing is that ForgeryNetwork was set up some time ago and so it feels a bit like reinventing the wheel. Plus it needs BNTA member(s) to enter the details. And ... speaking from experience, I and a couple of others from here are already members of an informal network who alert each other about suspect coins via email. It will take time and effort for someone to bring the BNTA database up to speed and perhaps to keep it updated, so perhaps not too surprising nobody has 'volunteered'. And of course, unless it's viewable by the general public the number of people who will see it and benefit will be small ..
  3. LOL It's been interesting to see Dave's journey from relative novice collector to connoisseur! But then I guess we're all somewhat on that path. We start to get more discerning as we learn. Perfectly good coins that showed a type or scarcer variation I now look at and think .."now, if I had back what I spent on that I could put it towards something I really want"! Hence the attempted sales here. And I'm still open to offers ...
  4. ??? When I view your Member Profile PWA I don't see any warning points. You have seven 'Likes' from other members though, so I don't think you have anything to worry about! However if something I can't see is appearing and it concerns you then do feel free to take a screenshot and send it to Chris P. Could be a glitch? .
  5. Admins can 'warn' a member for being naughty. Not sure how the points thing works. I think it just comes as part of the forum software. People can also 'like' posts, though I don't now if many use it. I only use the warning system for spammers .. the forums I'm a moderator for it enables me to block a member from making further posts. Those I'm not, a message goes to someone higher up so they can review a thread or posts. I don't think I've ever used it just to tell someone off. We're all adults here and unless something's libellous or directly personal I tend to leave it be. .
  6. There are of course things like these: http://www.dnw.co.uk/auctions/catalogue/results.php?auction_id=318&category=British Coins - Lots However it's hardly garage sale prices. And of course, postage from the UK to the USA won't be cheap ... I'm wondering if your best bet might be pawn shops/ jewellers? Though most items are likely to be well circulated you might just be lucky and prices are more likely to be based on metal value than numismatic .. To be honest, I'm not sure you are missing any opportunities. I suspect there just aren't that many either side of the Atlantic, what with people looking out for silver to hoard and coin roll hunting ...
  7. I have better. But that one has the second reverse with the Aberystwyth plumes, so I'd like an upgrade of the first in due course... .
  8. Groat then. I think halfgroats are closer to the size of a 20p. Cool find btw! .
  9. Hi Tom. Would help if you could measure the diameter. But though it's not a series I have much experience with my guess would be a groat (London issue) Henry VII possibly? Mint mark looks like ... cross over rose? Though those wouldn't be right for Bust IIIc, which is what it looks like to me ... Hopefully someone more experienced will now chip in! .
  10. Try here: http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/7880-posting-pics/ My impression is that more US collectors are interested in 'error' coins than UK ones. Though off-metal strikes and coins that have been mint damaged do have a following, natural degradation of the dies seems to very much depend on which denomination and reign we're talking about. .
  11. Welcome dz. Can't say I've ever bought in 'bulk' before, although I have got an occasional mixed lot from an auction, it's been for one coin I particularly wanted, so I can't speak from experience. However I would imagine that most 'accumulations' such as biscuit tins full of coins at auction will have been cherry picked, but maybe some of the others here can give their views. Perhaps garage sales will have more potential, but most people are on the look out for a bit of cash these days and anything shiny and/or old will attract attention and again likely get picked out IMHO. As to double florins and crowns, I'd guess you'd need to be very lucky to find those in a mix of coins even here in Britain. Though I could be wrong! .
  12. ℞ I used MS Word, typed in 211E and pressed Alt+X to get a symbol I could copy/paste. .
  13. LOL Don't tempt me! However that would not help me amass my first £million. Which I am sure I shall need if I am to buy that entire collection of prime quality Tower shillings coming up for sale any day now.
  14. Do you mean this Chris? See here: http://www.theopticalvisionsite.com/glossary/eye-need-to-know-where-did-rx-come-from/#.VEKasctwbDc More commonly used in medical circles to represent "prescription". Wikipedia has an entry under Medical prescription, which mentions the Unicode and HTML for the symbol, but I don't know how to get code to work in a post so had to link to the above image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_prescription As to it being used in numismatic circles, assuming we're talking about the same thing, I wasn't aware of that. It doesn't appear in anything I have, though my literature only goes back to 1918. A guess? Someone looked through available symbols and found the one closest to Rv .
  15. Another photo of #3, S.2791 Sharp E1/2 Ex Noble Sale 77 Nov 04 Lot 788 Again, I will consider offers. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say ... And in case anyone was interested, I've decided to keep #1 for now so that's no longer available. Thanks!
  16. S.2789 Sharp D4/1 Privy mark Harp (21 Jun 1632-11 Jul 1633) was originally thought to be rare with this bust but is probably just scarce. £70 BIN or make me an offer!
  17. I'd agree with Nicholas. It looks decent on the reverse with little obvious wear, suggesting the portrait is more weakly struck than perhaps worn. Do you know the weight Bagerap? As for where ... since there's interest here you might find it simpler to 'do a deal' on predecimal. It would certainly be quicker than putting into an auction ... and less fees than that or eBay. I've sold to several members here and I believe we've all been happy with how it went. Just an idea. .
  18. Well, Happy Birthday to you too Copper! And of course to Gollum, Neil and ChKy, for yesterday. Happy Belated ChKy! I hope everyone had/has a splendid day!
  19. Without a photo uk, it's difficult to tell you much. Coins can be dis/mis/coloured for a number of reasons. They may have been left in a pocket when clothes went in the wash. Someone may have played with it using some household chemicals. Sometimes coins are even struck from the 'wrong' metal at the mint. However in most cases it will be one of the former causes and the coin won't be worth anything more than usual. If it's a mint error it may be worth something. But not enough to give up the day job I'm afraid! There is a note on posting a photo here: http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/7880-posting-pics/ Oh, and welcome to predecimal. As you might have guessed, we get asked questions about odd looking coins quite a lot. A photo might help get you a more detailed answer. .
  20. Got my first few coins from Bob at Dolphin. Gosh, I wish I could buy a few from the Double Sovereign now! But sadly their stock is nothing like it used to be. .
  21. Yes. Hammered silver coin by the look of it. .
  22. Mine for comparison: In case it helps. .
  23. Genuine? I believe so. Mint mark? Anchor. S.2785 Sharp B3/2 My personal view? Not sure about the yellow patch. A couple of the other coins from this seller seem to have similar. If they are from old sellotape it will come off easily enough with acetone. But if it's something like Araldite ...
  24. German States, 4 stüber (assuming about 29mm) Jülich-Cleve-Berg Occupying forces before the division of 1609 http://www.medievalcoinage.com/saurma/someoldcoins.org/saur/1/1639.htm Maybe ...
  25. Which I guess brings me back to how sustainable is this Rob? Dealers will have to continue to pay higher prices for the top pieces, leaving nothing to enable them to pick up lesser, but still good, coins that can be held as stock. Everything will become shorter term as they need to find buyers for expensive pieces to release funds for the future ... OK, I know there aren't many dealers that have 'basements' like Baldwins. Heck, even Baldwins may no longer have a basement and the idea of holding on to something for five years, let alone 50 or more, seems increasingly unrealistic. But most markets depend on the dealers having stock that's available for some time, not just a few days. And customers at 'lower' levels who gradually upgrade their purchases so keeping some fluidity. If the housing market only consisted of the purchase and sale of million pound properties I couldn't see it lasting long. That seems to be the way the coin market is heading ... .
