    I think the two 1874's with that 'wide ribbons with small gap' obverse are _way_ rarer than is assumed. Just look at how often any examples turn up anywhere, in worn condition. Very unusual to see one. Mike is so right- one in this condition turning up, regardless of perceptions of rarity, would drive a purchase that would be argued as 'rash' in our house, but I would defend the decision! An UNC 1864 or 1869 or 1871 would not be half as tempting......

    Tin suffers from 'tin pest'- below about 13˚C the white tin allotrope really wants to be the grey powdery form. There are videos of this spontaneously happening in a freezer.

    You can find stupid price hikes in 1970's Fords. I have to deal with mad prices everyday - doing vintage studio gear is sometimes very odd, The prices people are paying for anything from microphones to complete consoles are through the roof, in many instances making coin price rises look unremarkable. I think this time the prices will fall back slightly once people stop acing like headless chickens. It's already happening in the classic car market with some models, with the Austin Healey 3000, for example, dropping back from mad heights as people realised the price was just too much.....

    Hmm..why would I worry if outbid? Someone wants to pay more than me? I let them have it. Paying more than you wanted, often with a buyers premium, for something that everyone has seen, is how you lose when you think you are winning. Real fun comes from finding something really cheap as a surprise in the bottom of a box etc., and you also then have a story!

    I use a refreshingly simple system- I bid what I feel is my maximum when I see the listing. The last minute bid to be 'clever' bores me - I have a very full busy life and I don't need to turn an auction into a mind game with strangers. 'Snipe' - 'Stealer' - what do those names convey? There you go.

    I only have experience of toning bronze, but an important factor must be common to silver, namely that of temperature. I have a lamp that's on a lot, with a compact fluorescent lamp in it, mounted base down. If you slide a penny that someone has 'cleaned' in between the glass coils, it's supported by its edges, and sits at a nice temperature, and re-toning is surprisingly fast, and even on both sides of the coin. Acetone first is a good idea.

    My father's side of the family are still in Kitchener, Ontario. In 1916 they held a referendum to change the township's name to that from....Berlin.....
