  1. I hate to argue too much, but the 5 pound is 37mm and the 2 pounds is 28mm, given that the first (A) looks like a crown for size (39mm) and colour, B should be smaller than A for anything gold.
  2. B should be smaller than A, I would expect 2-10mm if it were gold (but the reverse looks more like that of a 2pound rather than the reverse of a 5 pound), so this is what makes me think it's toned silver rather than gold, making it a very nice Crown as well. Given that you've posted 4 very nice coins, the rest of the hoard may also be a little exceptional, even pennies can be worth considerably more than a couple of quid.
  3. You might get a week or maybe a fortnight out of them, depends ho comfortable you like your holidays to be I shoudl have said, size is also important (as wel as weight if you could). Is top right Silver or gold, my monitor makes it look possibly like a toned silver. If the top are 39mm Left would be a crown, and right (if gold) is possibly a 2 pounds coin Bottom L half sov and right Sovereign. Dates and better definition photos would be required to assist with grade and possible value, however I'll leave that to our local experts. I stand to be corrected on all of the above due to lack of sufficent size weight and date info prior to posting
  4. I noticed an outbreak of "interestingly toned" coins on the 'bay last night. Mainly Vickies, but may have been some post 1900 too. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Queen-Victoria-One-Penny-Coin-1901-In-Capsule-Good-Condition/182945753365?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144 Looks like this seller has found a way to get this finish, heat and something I guess (it looks like when you polish a hot motorcyle exhaust).
  5. Reverse (which is the obverse) would be nice, looks like it could be a good loft find!
  6. I found a suspect 1905 shilling in a recent job lot, fortunately I didn't stump much for "everything", but knowing how hard and expensive real ones are, gives me reason to believe it isn't kosher (that and the edges feel like they were pressed yesterday). I just need to find a decent place to bury it for a thousand years - perhaps with my ashes and a couple of Romans and a few Olympic 50p's etc lol :))
  7. It's certainly not unreasonable that people want gap fillers, I quite understand it, but in 50 years time when these collections come up for sale it'll be an absolute nightmare explaining that all the best most rare coins are utter crap.
  8. Wow, thats gonna smart a little.
  9. Wow, just a shame Fiona didn't clarify which colour was which. I guess the general consenus will be green = more scarce so probably Southbank. Interestingly Sets are omitted, and there is no mention of blue.
  10. I have to say, I've come across the odd capsule my sausage-fingers couldn't get to grips with. Doesn't mean they're old. I bet his is superglued though, just for added plausible deniability.
  11. I find it had to believe people pay that much for obvious repros. At least the chinese do theirs in a really convincing style! (gits).
  12. They don't come much better!
  13. Hi Sophie, I can vouch for "searching the forum", it's kept me in good reading for over a year now, and I still haven't read even half of it! As for the dealers, and in fact everyone here, you couldn't wish to meet a nicer group. Once you start seeing what others are buying, keeping hold of your "spendable" money rather than turning it into "collectable money" becomes quite a challenge
  14. Hmm, thats rather unexpected, seems modern man is a collectomaniac.
  15. Either way, it would be very much appreciated. VickySilver has shown me a couple of images and I can see how they don't always show what you see in the hand, but as tesco says, every little helps - especially with coins.
  16. Obviously because 4.5 million people in the UK believe they are worth far more than 20p and need to collect them.....?
  17. Are there any pictures of yours on here Gary, I'd love to get a better understanding of just how different these things can look but I'm not in a position to go and buy them just to find out.
  18. Or the "Sold" listings .. as these are the ones which are definately a done deal.
  19. Could be a sovereign .. or a farthing. I guess pics / colour / size would all be useful, as well as maybe a description of the reverse.
  20. It's by far the smartest case I've seen for the 51's
  21. Nick, you're 100% correct. I've spent all afternooon looking at shillings, and this sixpence has come up in my search results, and I've gone and got the hump with an innocent coin! Apologies all. normal service will now be resumed.
  22. MS65 example https://images.pcgs.com/TrueView/33147145_Large.jpg There are many many more, I found nearly every one to be "mostly accurate" lines of dots, and the new shiny looking ones on ebay going for 9.99+ BIN all seem to be the acne version. What started me thinking about it is that J.E.B on trunc JH 1887's should not be the "norm" and I certainly wouldn't expect them to be the predominent variety availabe having GEF or better.
  23. Oh, I think she puts up with me admirably I'd hate to have to train another one, I haven't the patience anymore.
  24. It has awful acne. the dots (device?) in the background of the upper right quadrant of the shield are not uniform. They should be considerably less jumbled. example from somewhere...
  25. 1887 Sixpences... the new easy tenner?
