  1. Here is a reasonable book for identification. I started out with this book many years ago. Its great value for money at under £10 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1902040732/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510006265&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=short+cross+coinage&dpPl=1&dpID=41AmhXmeH5L&ref=plSrch
  2. Gileberd at Exeter. A coin of John. I'll look abit closer for the class.... Class 5b2. Thats a rare mint? Very nice find ?
  3. I am swinging towards a Richard coin which would make this a Canterbury coin. Class wise i cannot say with 100% certainty unfortunately as critical details are worn. Based on the X and large N,s I'd say a class 4a but that is a guess.
  4. Reinald is the moneyer. A Reinald minted under Henry II and Richard Ist at London , Canterbury and Northampton. I'd need to dig deeper to gather much more information. The mints a no goer I fear as it could be LVN , NOR or a simple CA.
  5. Thanks. I can read them off by heart just looking at them and have memorised almost all of the moneyers. Nice find again. Great condition. Super !!
  6. Class 7b1
  7. Ioan chic at Canterbury. Henry III. I'll get back to you with the class once I've scrutinised it abit.?
  8. Wow. Cool find. Must of missed this one. Great find!

    id help.

Throughly agree. We are a dying breed on here , us hammered fans that is. I posted a nice short cross a few days ago. I think 2 people liked it , poor turn out that but to be fair it was posted in the wrong place. We need a recent hammered acquisitions thread or something along similar lines ?

    Henry III

No problem, i like a challenge ?. Providing you have enough to ID you can usually find out the moneyer , mint or monarch. All 3 if your really lucky !

    Henry III

The joining of letters is called litigated. Its quite common on long cross coins. Your coins a class 5 coin. I cannot be more precise than that as i cannot make out the X in rex. Someone else may know the sub class. Clive is good with these. Short cross are more my thing. Nice finds by the way.

Ricard on lvn so Ricard at London. Not sure of the class as i don't have my books to hand.

    Henry III

It wasn't meant to be the full exact mint name, they couldn't fit it all on so it was abbreviated. I make it as IOH/OHS’/EDM/VHD which i suppose would translate as Ion at St edmunds so it would be SEDMUND as what looks like an H is actually an N and the V is a U. Hope that makes sense.?

    Henry III

No Terci is for three. King Henry Terci! It was eventually replaced in later class coins by III becoming HENRICUS REX III
  16. Sad news. Condolences to his family.

    Henry III

Sounds good. He does have the long narrow bust of 2b. ?

    Henry III

The mint is Bury St Edmunds. Moneyer is Ion . He struck from 2a upto 5a3. This website should aid you further with tying the class down exactly. www.henry3.com
  19. Another bloody one! Reported it!. Getting fed up of seeing these now. https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/hammered-coins/162738646034
  20. Earlier in the year i recall seeing on a website a short cross coin with a previously unknown moneyers name on it. If my memory is correct it was Austen or Austin at Ocse ( oxford). Has anybody else seen this coin and if so do you have a link to the site it was on? I can't find it now. I found it by mistake previously while researching. I believe it was found on a club dig by a metal detecting club by a young female member. The images of the coin where on Twitter i think. Thanks.

Your welcome. Shortcross legends is on Amazon. Priced £35- 40 i think. Its constantly being updated with new editions so well worth buying.
  22. Really. I just googled it and couldn't find it either. I know it did exist previously because I've viewed it before. It wasn't very good because it relied on ordinary folk to submit coins they thought were fakes. I should of told him to post it on here for a second opinion.

You actually did good for just a spink price guide which i assume you were using. The 3 is just a sub class. There's subtle differences in coins in between the classes so they get a sub class. I used a combination of books. Jp masses collection of short cross coins and Gerry slevins short cross legends. The last one probably being the more up-to-date of the two and more affordable if you were looking for a good guide.
  24. I would pop them out the caps and try again. If your worried about smudges or finger prints get a glasses cleaning type lint clothe and use that to handle them.

After much examination & scrutinizing i think its a 7c3. The N and D kind of looks litigated and this is only seen with this Moneyer in class 7c3 and 8b also they are the only two classes that end with a D in London but if it were an 8b coin it would start with a cross pommee before the N in Nichole so i feel its highly likely a 7c3.
