You think the rev is identical? From a picture I have in a book, it looks vastly inferior in workmanship. It's obvioulsy supposed to be the same rev as the real thing, but it doesn't look very well done to me.

You're right E Dawson, the gold coins, which would have been all too tempting to spend at the time are often never seen in true BU. And with gold being so soft it usually always has marks.

That's not the official one. The official one is by Croker of of much higher quality. That one may be contemporary. In the Croker medal the Queen faces left and the reverse is the same but of higher relief and with better executed figures.

Like most people that find an unknown coin that has a rare variety, they always assume that thier coin is one of those rare varieties without having a comparison and in many cases without even understanding what the variety concerns! I'm afraid the chances of your 1889 Sovereign being worth much more than bullion value are pretty slim.

I don't have a Coin Yearbook 2007. But I can assure you, there are no rare 1889 Sovereigns. It's either a printing error, or you're looking at the wrong coin. I don't know where you've been looking, but 1889 is a bog standard rather common jubilee head sov. Even the Australian mint coins are only a little bit more valuable that the London one. Have you not already got a copy of Collectors' Coins GB 2007 (see link above, 2nd book image from left)? It might cause less confusion in the future.

eBay have just ripped all my listings off and suspended my account for selling my own eBooks (for the umpteenth time their ebay listing checker bot has somehow come to the conclusion that the Rotographic ebooks do not belong to me). Of course, there is no phone number and it's Easter weekend. So I will loose a day or more worth of sales before they even see my message. If their really was another large auction site, people would leave ebay in droves and I'd be one of the first! With all the money they make, the next very important step is a proper customer care dept. I'd even put up with one in India!

I don't think you can attach .htm files (because of potential viruses they could contain). If you are trying to attach something written, you could do a screen shot and attach it as a jpg, or if it's lots of text you could 'copy' the whole text and paste it into a post.

(the £2 with the Queen wearing a necklace were never rarer than normal....go spend it!) 1957 is the halfpenny with clam sea variety. There are some bargains on Predecimal.com, or at least well graded coins that are priced fairly. In antique shops and 'part time' coin dealer shops the things are usually overpriced because the people are not very informed and they overgrade things and charge a bit too much because they don't really know the true (often lower) worth.

I keep moving some of your posts Coins4u because I don't feel they are not really varieties. They are interesting to see, but in this case the 'variety' has been caused as a by-product of mass production methods.

You're right, Mr Average anywhere is absolutely thick. The fact that we and other forum members can put a few sinsible sentences together is a lot more than most people. It comes down to effort too, people just don't make the effort either.
