  1. I had a great day, got the N over N sideways, lcw under foot, nice 4F, E over P and lots of lesser coins, and paid over the odds for the books but I wanted the Jerrams volumes. Also bought the 1879 with the 'shuttle' above the lighthouse . Great to meet Richard, pretty in pink, sad not to see Pete but Semra said he had not turned up. Nice lunch in Spoonies between the penny sections. And hot chocolate in Starbucks on the way home. Perfect day. Jerry

  3. Thanks for additional info. My favorite coin from Genoa are the 96 Lire from1792-97 with the Madonna/Shield supported by Griffins. There was a nice mint state example from Bolaffi Auctions, sadly it went way over estimate. Here is that other coin...AV Doppia 1616 Genoa Mint Doge Rulers

  6. You have punches for regularly used features such as letter, numbers, shields etc. These are not hand engraved, but entered onto the die by physically hammering the character into the soft metal before the die is hardened. It is this action which allows you to identify different dies because the detail is never an exact replication of the previous one. These punches are made of hardened metal, but can break just like anything else, so the finer the detail, the more likely it is that a piece could break off.
