Paddy started following Lightly cleaned with scratches, how would you grade this coin.
-
When you posted your query, I did not even notice the lack of H! Very well done for finding one of those. How long have you had it? £6 is a stunning bargain. As to grading - I am not probably the best person to quote as I tend to be old-fashioned and grade harsher than most modern dealers. For example, I would not agree with the London Coins grading of the other example. I would give that only F on the obverse and a nVF on the reverse. On that basis, yours would grade aF or F both sides, with the scratches noted as details. But what the heck, I would forgive any grade to have an example in my collection! I prefer to grade on Rob's basis - "Acceptable" or "Not Acceptable".

I found this 1861 2+D coin and assumed it was 8 over 6, because the 8 over 8 I wasnt aware it exists, Then I found this example listed on ebay by Gary: https://www.ebay.com/itm/326784536418 once i started looking for 8 over 8 and then I found a third on London coins. Following sending the information to Richard Sessions this information was added to his website; https://rarestpennies.wordpress.com/1861-f18-8-over-8/ If you have some 1861 coins have a look closely at the 8 will be interesting to know if any others appear. The rarest penny website by Richard has proven really useful and has allowed me to learn alot of information in a short period of time of which I cant thank Richard enough. I enjoy finding coins and going to the website to learn about pairings and variety's, more often than not things are not what I think they are.. It's a steep learning curve identifying variety's and pairings from this series. And would be much harder without a site like Richard's.

Experiments with verdigris treatment

Ah now that shows great promise! -
And welcome to the forum. It is good to question any anomalies you may spot as true new varieties are still out there - at least three genuinely significant new Victorian pennies have first been described here over the last decade or so. Don’t be afraid to keep posting and show any interesting acquisitions. Jerry

1723 SSC sixpence - 3 over something?
Rob replied to Paddy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It will probably be a reworked 1717 reverse die. I wrote about mine on p.806 of the acquisition thread and another point where we had quite a lengthy discussion involving brg658 about this. More than one die may be involved, but it looks conclusive on the two coins mentioned in that discussion. There are at least a few die pairs, but haven't had time to pursue the maximum number I can identify. -

I managed to get 3 of the 2023 the first week they were dropped into circulation while on holiday in Filey. I've had one more since & a 5p piece. I'd probably have had more but i use my card for most purchases.

Best place to sell would be eBay or the like as you get the most money. Not sure about current price as it's been a bit up and down lately.

I have seen plenty of both 2023 and 2025 £1 coins, though less recently, so maybe the Ebay hype is getting to people. Now if you found a 2024 £1, or indeed any 2024 GB coins in circulation, that would be well worth reporting!

I'm not a modern coin collector...I use to keep an eye out for the undated 20p's and during the Olympics 50p's were circulating I sold them as I found them and made a good return on them.....and saw them reduce in price as time moved on....However today The 2025 King Charles III Bees £1 coin was in my small change....now its claimed to be currently the rarest circulating uk £1 coin, with only 170,000 entering circulation.......Is this true or just hype ? I see them on ebay for silly money but not wanting to get caught up with this game....
