In answer to your first question the best i have seen was Garys on the forum which from memory i think was slabbed GEF with some lustre. Plenty now turned up in low grades but very rare in better than VF.

If you turn the coin over you will see the 1 in date is to Gap and for F164 & F164a is to tooth. The obverse although has a few indicators (in the groom book) has a wider Gap between T & O which you can see even if the teeth not there.

my gut feeling is yes to 1*+C.

Can I ask please; what is the best condition 1*+C you have seen? I found one last week which is 100% 1*+C no doubt in the normal heavily circulated condtion. I also found the coin imaged I wasn't 100 % sure with this one because the tooth is slightly out of shape. What do you think? Thanks.

All these pursuits are commonly perceived as a bit eccentric or cranky, and anyone trying to explain what makes their hobby so fascinating might well be in danger of reinforcing that view! I don't necessarily agree. Coins have been a central part of everyday life for centuries. Given a few minutes I am pretty confident I can convince most folks that studying and collecting them can be both worthwhile and cool. The sharp trend away from cash transactions (presumably there's some quantification of this out there) is a dark cloud on the horizon, but the history remains.

I concur. The approach to the newsagent is a lucrative source of income.

I can only offer Peck's attribution to this idea as it was his designation. Applicable to non-currrency coin only and either contemporary with the date seen, or struck at some later date as presents to friends and visitors. I think it unlikely that any accuracy will be achieved without documentary evidence of specific visitors to Soho along with the dates, unlike the restrikes which being continually modified show clear underlying detail so that a progression can be established along with a probable date using other evidence.

I am pretty sure its BP1896Ac 11 Teeth, but yes clearer pictures of the teeth and without the lines The teeth have reasonable gaps between them and the drawn teeth on the picture a distraction.

You’re absolutely right. In this case, it turned out to be a bargain because of the incorrect grading. I think there are various levels of cleaning, and unfortunately even light cleaning falls into the same category as more aggressive cleaning methods. That said, in my opinion it’s a fine specimen with a lovely colour, and I reckon it’ll soon be freed from its plastic cage.
