DaveG38 Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 (edited) I've just bought an upgrading 1930 halfcrown and for the first time, I've properly studied the reverse design. I'm curious about the shield design, which has an odd indented loop at the top left of the shield, but nothing similar on the right. Does anybody know what this was meant to signify? When I look at it, the design now looks oddly uneven, so there must be a good reason for this loop. Here's a typical example to remind everyone: Edited October 5, 2014 by DaveG38 Quote
Rob Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Good question and not a clue. That's one that has to be worthy of pursuing with the RM Quote
Coinery Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I'd never noticed before, I have to say.Another point of general interest, why don't we ever see daffodils representing the Welsh contingent? Quote
TomGoodheart Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 (edited) I guess George Kruger Gray based the shield design on a jousting shield. The 'loop' you refer to was where the lance would have rested .... Edited October 5, 2014 by TomGoodheart 1 Quote
ozjohn Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I think the ident on the top LH side of the shield is the position for a lance to go through and help to stabilize it Quote

Peckris Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 It's interesting, when you study the use of the shield on coins throughout history, engravers seem to have had a free hand - there is such a variety of design, it's almost as if they were told "there is no ACTUAL shield, so it's up to you how you depict it, providing it carries the royal coat of arms". CartwheelTwopence Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 I'd never noticed before, I have to say.Another point of general interest, why don't we ever see daffodils representing the Welsh contingent?I agree with you there; that's why for the Royal Mint £1 coin design competition, my design is a floral themed shield featuring English roses, Scottish thistles, Irish clovers... and a Welsh daffodil! CartwheelTwopence Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Oh - and by the way - the shield does not have a loop taken from it! Quote
