Fake in an NGC Slab!

Reserve judgement... If you look closely at that, it appears there may be some gunk trapped between the top acorn and the slab? It doesn't display typical wear, especially when you see the other acorns are ok. There's an 'edge' to that mark, and you can just make out the bobbles under it. Have another look Declan, you may find it's not worn as you think it is?

Perhaps the slabber was eating a particularly flaky pasty, or rolling a cigarette with particularly old tobacco, at the time it was sealed. :rolleyes:

God, they're slabbing some shite! If I saw that H8 coin unslabbed on eBay I'd run a mile! Thank goodness it's 'authenticated'! :blink:

To me 'VF Details' isn't a grade. You might as well say 'some parts nice' or 'OK for it's age'! ebay grades for ebay crap. :angry:

C'mon, Richard, you're not losing faith in the TPGC's are you? What they mean is: 'well struck-up SOMEWHERE, but I don't know enough to tell you which bit!' :unsure:

Exactly. And the problem being that, in the US, you can only quote a numeric grade in a coin listing if it has been provided by an approved grading company. You can't quote price list guides such as Spink (even if you don't give a grade, but just offer it for info) if the coin isn't graded by an approved grading company. And you can't list any coin for over $2500 unless it's been graded (and presumably slabbed) again, by an approved grading company.

From the ebay blog of an American dealer: "Always return coins that you feel do not meet the ANA grading standards even if a grading service has slabbed them as MS70. However, please think twice about returning a PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS graded coin since they are the most reliable grading services. If you disagree with their grading educate yourself on the ANA standards. I personally no longer accept returns on these four grading services."

So if TPGCs are not offering accurate certification or grading, then there's a problem, no?

You should maybe point Said blogger to the fake coin in the NGC slab and see what he has to say about the BIG 4s authenticity then

Very interesting. And Myth 6 is of great interest too, to anyone who's owned a decimal proof set - sealed into their plastic coffins, a lot of those coins tone, and tone badly (I call as witness, the 1973 set..).

Just out of interest, how much does it cost to get a coin slabbed? :unsure:

It varies on the value of the coin and speed of grading.

H5 groats are quite rare with the S1762B variety quoted booking at £2500 in VF. I suspect either someone is very lucky, or skullduggery has occurred. I'm just trying to get up to speed on H4 & H5 groats but the curve is a bit steep at the moment. They aren't the same things as one has a lis on the breast and one doesn't, but I note in Potter's write up on these things that contemporary copies existed, probably produced on the continent. For the record, he also noted knowing of only half a dozen coins of some types, so it is unlikely we are looking at your everyday find.

No, they are two separate sellers, the first one allegedly in Paris, the second in Ireland. It's the unexpected abundance on ebay of coins that book above £2K in VF that made me sit up and look harder. For a smaller denomination, that is a large number.

Out of interest, is anyone registered on the BNTA site and knows what the 'Forgeries' section is about?
