Debbie Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 Sorry Stuart, am not ignoring you but have just returned from a dramatic weekend at my cousins wedding in Basingstoke. My mother tripped and fell and we think broke her nose and we ended up call out an ambulance and spending some time at Newbury hospital. What is it about this weekend? - Have just read Peters post - must be some inauspicious date in the Feng Shui calander! Anyway John seems to have quite a few engraved tokens on the Bay of late. Were these all from one collection John? Is the collector still alive?! Would love to make contact with someone who has been collecting engraved coins for many years. Quote

I am in contact with one of the collectors (who has been collecting for many years) and will ask if he would like to correspond with you if you wish? Quote

My mum is late 70's but we drag the old dragon out as much as possible...she breathes fire but still gives more than she takes. Quote

Debbie Posted June 29, 2012 Author Posted June 29, 2012 You know talking of script, I really like some of the old English fonts for example :blink:a picture here.Sometimes however, they can be quite complicated and a little confusing. What do you think the letters are on the second coin? Quote

Debbie Posted June 29, 2012 Author Posted June 29, 2012 LOL.... I thought it was AB and then I thought it could be CALR. I've looked at it too much and I can't tell any more! Quote
Coinery Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 C R, I think.I think definitely C or E, something with a curving left edge, at least! Let us know Debbie when an expert in calligraphy nails it for you! Quote

What do you think the letters are on the second coin?My feeling is TA, LB. The first is a bit contrived, though the T is similar to the one The Telegraph newspaper uses, the engraver has had to stretch it to make an 'a' ..but the LB seems fairly clear to me. argentumandcoins Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I did a similar test when I was undergoing a psyche evaluation in the old days. It looks like sex to me (I bet Peter sees the same). Quote
Colin G. Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 My guess it TR it is old english script, slightly modified Quote

Rob Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Bizarre. Text-speak in the 1600s or is it modern? Quote
TomGoodheart Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 I've cracked it!! No one was correct - its U R Well Done Debbie! And after that little challenge it should be no problem at all for you to convince my wife that all the time and effort I spend on coin related stuff is worthwhile and that a few more £,000 to spend on the things would be an entirely justified and welcome gift. Somehow she just doesn't see it ..! Quote
Debbie Posted June 30, 2012 Author Posted June 30, 2012 It was engraved on an American 1870 dime Rob. Somehow she just doesn't see it ..! At least you are at home most of the time for this hobby - you could be out all day fishing or motor cycling and at least its not gambling!Mmmm… perhaps you should commission a special love token for her Richard Quote
