Sword Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Apologies for reviving an old tread. When I first started coin collecting, I brought some really nice coins from W&W. However, they had nothing of interest for me for quite a few years now. I have just checked out their auction catalogue and was shocked by the quality of grading. This 1902 matt proof crown is graded as straight FDC! The marks on the horse's neck are frightful. Quote
VickySilver Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Yes, I have finished with them as one year at one auction I sent back 5 out of 6 coins "won"! Quote
Michael-Roo Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Obverse too. Ed's neck, back and below the beard, and the field to the right of his eye. Quote

1949threepence Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 To get the grade so wrong doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the rest of the operation. Quote
Sword Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Exactly. There is a lot of wear on St George's chest too. I don't think I can bid with them again as they are unlikely to mention hairline, cleaning etc and these things are often not apparent from photos. Quote

There was something else they got badly wrong a few months ago. It was either they'd missed the fact that a coin was rare and had touted it as normal, or vice versa - can't remember which. I think somebody e mailed them about it. Quote
Rob Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 One gilt 'Soho pattern' a few years ago was a painted currency Christmas bauble. I told them, they disagreed, I said I was going home. Their minder asked if I wanted to leave any bids. . Silly man. I walked out and bought a York halfcrown from Lloyd Bennett instead. Quote
VickySilver Posted November 15, 2016 Posted November 15, 2016 Looks a lot better, and quite good. Hard to tell from photos, and likely best in hand - to nitpick there are some toning (hair)lines in and around the devices in the fields of the reverse which is actually quite normal for issue as most are aware. There is a funny die break on George's upper thigh with what might be a small hit down to the right of that. Those are likely die dimples on George's deltoid so not detracting. Possibly a tick on dragon's thigh above "knee". The obverse appears nearly mark-free with very nice ding and dent-free edges. I'd be proud to own that were I you. PCGS seems quite variable on the grading of this one, not to mention other matte proofs. I suspect this would get a 64, but depending on if those are hairlines on rev. would go 65 Quote

VS has many fabulous coins in his collection and I would be very happy to own coins he describes as "quite" good. It's certainly better than mine (which I later slabbed and got CGS85) 1 Quote

VickySilver Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Ah, pictures, my Achilles heel. I've shown a few with Dave's help - maybe I can put up the 1893 Jub 6d in PCGS64 and quite (I like that word) proof-like. Will send it over this weekend if I can dig it out of SDB. 1926 Pattern Wood Peace Crown? 1 Quote

VickySilver Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 OK, I'm guilty. I really got to get off the arse and figure out how to post pictures! Quote

Sword Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Acquiring those coins is the really hard part! I have not even heard of the 1926 Pattern Wood Peace Crown until now. Just read about it on http://www.royalmintmuseum.org.uk/collection/collection-highlights/coins/peace-crown-1926/index.html I wonder why it is not listed in the latest edition of ESC (now that ESC has decided to include uniface coins). copper123 Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 If you are unhappy with the descriptions or overgradeing with ANY seller just return it and ask for a refund , any sort of decent dealer will offer that for a short time at least . It really is no good putting up with substandard coins and just moaning about them on message boards . Vote with your feet. Are you lot men or mice, eeeekkk, eeeekkk, LOL 1 Quote

Are you lot men or mice, eeeekkk, eeeekkk, LOL Grading is a matter of opinion and small discrepancies are expected. (e.g. GEF and AU, GVF and NEF etc.) However calling that 1902 matt proof crown FDC is just rather dishonest or at least incompetent. Most of us have put in commission bids without being able to view the lots in advance. In such cases, you often need to rely on the auctioneer's grading and descriptions to some extent. We are not moaning pointlessly but are just keeping each other informed of the auction houses that are more likely to give poor descriptions / over grading / flattering photos. People have also pointed out places like DNW give photos that don't always do the coins justice. Information like this help collectors (especially those that are less experienced) make more informed decisions when placing commission bids. Quote
Paulus Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 I don't believe you can return a coin to an auction house just because you don't agree with the grade, but I could be wrong? Quote
