Looking through the lots from yesterday and noticed that one farthing looked a bit different, thought it was a die flaw at first, the coin is a great looking GEF with lustre traces, got the lens and microscope out and hey presto it has the E of DEF clearly over another sideways E. I didn't even spot it yesterday when looking at the lot, this is definitely the most exciting farthing find I have ever found....now I do sound really sad :D

Has anyone ever heard of this one before?

Nice find!

Oops missed the important bit - 1848. I have trawled through my scans of 1848 farthings, just to double check, and no previous example is in there (I keep a scan of every Victoria and earlier farthing I handle)...I think it must be some form of OCD

Not in Batty or Bramah, I can not believe this one has never surfaced before...get checking!! ;)

I do that, Colin, and not just for farthings. Definitely towards the autistic end of the spectrum, like most of us, I suspect.

handy when you discover a variety though - just to make sure I didn't sell a Gouby X for 99p before I knew about them... :o

But that is the mad part, it would drive me nuts!! It is the only way i can start to get an idea of scarcities on varieties, which although not entirely accurate (because I may distort the figures by focusing on a type) does give a good indication.

I thought I was crazy doing it for farthings, you must be really crazy doing it for all denominations :blink:

Nice find Colin and an EF example at that. That's the problem with Farthings, they are so small that it is easy to overlook something like that.

I'm at the "Chicago International Coin Fair" today, and I am going to go through all the 1848 farthings to see if one is in anyone's stock. BTW...Knightsbridge Coins, from the UK is here on the Bourse Floor, does anyone know them?

Good luck Bob, would be great for another farthing collector to find one, but if you find two let me have one cheap!! ;)

Not familiar with Knightsbridge coins, but have a nice day :D

Yes, it's Stephen Fenton, aka St.James's Auctions.

Bought himself a new Bentley last I heard!

Well, he did quite well buying the Geo.III 5 guineas in Japan for £84K and selling it in his sale the following May for £180K, so he isn't short of a bob or two.

Also, he of 1933 20 Dollar gold fame. His share of that sale 3.75 million dollars less the purchase and inconveniences which still should have netted at least 2 Million dollars!

Also the proud seller of the previously unrecorded South Africa sixpence last year!

Aye, and Declan thinks we're high rollers Rob ;)

I was really disappointed with Knightsbridge Coins. They didn't bring a single coin to the Bourse! They only had one page passouts on their St James Auction Service!

The Chicago show was pretty good overall. It seems like it gets bigger every year. The hot thing was silver, it seemed like everyone was buying it!

BTW Colin...only saw three (3) 1848 Farthings, and none were the overstrike you pictured!
