OK, in this case it looks like a case of a balls up in the listing because you can't expect the £1 BIN to be intended, but if the price had been listed at a reasonable level, then to cover both seller and buyer against loss or claimed loss would not be outrageous given special delivery is £5.05 up to £500 compensation. It's only excessive if you charge SD postal rates for crap items of minimal value. Quote

It's horses for courses. Presumably you wouldn't complain that you had bought a coin too cheaply and if a coin got lost in the post that wasn't insured you would also have to take the loss on the chin. There are two parties to every transaction and both have interests that need to be considered. I send everything out at least signed for. If I didn't then buyers could make a claim on their credit card against me for non shipment of a paid for item and I would end up footing the bill. In the case of Paypal it is even worse because the seller is automatically the guilty party and so there is an even greater incentive to cover your backside. Quote

Any correspondence from the seller yet?As for the sick squid, it's fine if a coin is sent by Special Delivery since that just covers postage and a 'jiffy' envelope. For coins not worth insuring I'd always offer a Recorded alternative. And if I buy something I really don't want lost and SD isn't offered I've never had anyone refuse to use it if I covered the additional cost.This is a coin I suspect you'll want insured! As mentioned above, regardless of eBay, it comes under the standard contract law of offer & acceptance. By re-listing the coin he is making things worse. If he sells it to another party he then places himself in the position of having to 'make good' to me which could cost an awful lot more. My expensive London law firm is standing by Seriously, I'm not going to fleece him but I think it warrants a 'discussion' at least. Quote

I'd politely explain that you bought the item and paid for it and just leave it for them to say something in response.If he'd been more effusive with the apology then I'd be more generous.
