TomGoodheart Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Not a laugh, just wondered if anyone is following this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Edward-v1-siver-Hammered-coin-/150847991480?pt=UK_Coins_BritishHammered_RL&hash=item231f3daeb8?Assuming it's genuine, and I have no reason to think otherwise, and not ruined by say polishing, could be worth a bid. High starting bids often put people off and if you could get it for close to the opening price ....(I've tweaked the photo for my own purposes) Quote

Not that they can do anything, but a bid is supposed to be a contract ... Quote

I knew what he paid for it as he bought it from a customer of mine, who had bought it from me prior to the hike in bullion prices. Needless to say the auction end price showed him a loss after fees so it went back on as a buy it now. Private listings...........shilling sales! Quote

Debbie Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 counterfeit shillingWhy would anyone want to forge this? Quote
scott Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 its probably of the period, i have a fake halfpenny from 1958 and a couple of fake 20p's. makes you wonder. Quote
Peckris Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 counterfeit shillingWhy would anyone want to forge this? It might be worth a punt - it looks like the real thing. But what if ... the Mint were experimenting with other alloys, like they did with those nickel 1923/24 shillings?? Quote
Rob Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 counterfeit shillingWhy would anyone want to forge this? Probably someone experimenting with producing moulds and casting using electrical solder (tin/lead) or some similarly low melting point alloy. You can do it in the oven at home and easily engrave the edge milling too given how soft solder is. Quote
davidrj Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 (edited) counterfeit shillingWhy would anyone want to forge this? One Pound in 1929 had the purchasing power of about £40.50 todaySo a shilling was worth about £2 - ie twice the value of a dud pound coin today - simples Edited July 4, 2012 by davidrj Quote

Yesterday I was congratulated on converting the previous day's anaemic offerings into something really tasty second time round. It was only braised beef though with veggies, and browned mash sealing in all the flavour. Quote
