declan03 Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 A question for possibly Rob? Does this coin look too good? The A in GRATIA is unbarred and the portrait looks slightly different in my opinion. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Queen-Anne-Silver-Halfcrown-1707-Sexto-VF-Spink-3582/272979956277?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140107094819%26meid%3Dc9414aea9b6b450cafb7ddb0d69875ee%26pid%3D100039%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D272979956277&_trksid=p2054436.c100039.m2059 Quote

zookeeperz Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Although I think the description is a little flattering. I would say the coin was gnawed on by a Beaver http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GEORGE-III-TOWER-MILLED-SILVER-HALFCROWN-COIN-015145-/260642761054 1 Quote

I bought a coin a few weeks ago that came with a COA. The coin was a class 7b1 coin. The COA said it was 7c. It went in the bin ?. Just a laminated print off lol. 1 Quote

I'd of bought it without the COA regardless. Strangely it was correctly identified online but not on the COA. They add very little value to a purchase really as its not like its a COA from somebody at the British museum. Suppose they are intended to give people peace of mind but if any joe bloggs can write one and print it off they are in theory not worth the paper they are printed on. Unwilling Numismatist Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 I bet all it really says in the small print is "We guarantee that This certificate is 100% authentic, and any goods that accompany it may or may not be". 2 Quote
hibernianscribe Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 I found this site by accident and think this is extremely worrying, and the guy running the show is so *****g cocky about it! He views it as "artwork". http://alphaofficium.weebly.com Quote

Most people running their own enterprise exude self-confidence. Nothing new in that. when was the last time you saw someone advertise themselves as not the best, just a typical person providing a decent service/product. Everybody positions themselves as expert/specialists - but can't all be the best. Quote

Some of these fakes are very realistic - have a look these hammered ones: http://alphaofficium.weebly.com/store/p137/Elizabeth_I_Groat.html http://alphaofficium.weebly.com/store/p176/Charles_I_Half_Crown.html http://alphaofficium.weebly.com/store/p60/100_Charles_I_English_Civil_War_Siege_coins..html Quote
Rob Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Ok, the Civil War pieces are more realistic (didn't see those). An Elizabeth I 6th coinage groat doesn't exist, though it does look suspiciously like a shilling. I was going off the gallery pictures which are all obviously wrong. The images with a partial picture won't load for me when I click on them - just keeps cycling? The links above do however. I agree, I don't like the El.1 2d as it is too realistic. Quote
Rob Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Just seen this line. 'Unless specifically noted, all of the pictures in my catalog are actual historical coins I use as models for my work.' Which would suggest that what you see is not what you get. Certainly from the gallery there is nothing to worry about as they are obvious copies. Quote

Rob Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Not very often I post something here, but this one is complete b******s. Silver, unlikely. Genuine, absolutely not. All Wulfhere stycas have his title. And in any case the lettering should frighten anyone away, so unsurprisingly, it's a private listing. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anglo-Saxon-AR-Sceat-King-of-Northumbria-Wulfhere-c-850-900-AD-475/272977189693?hash=item3f8eb55b3d:g:~oQAAOSwGPxaLWv7 Quote

Anything bright and shiny with that similar lettering is a no go for me. Some of them look like they were made with a soldering iron. Quote

jelida Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 At least half of his many wares are modern fantasy pieces and fakes, all claimed as ancient, and he has massive positive feedback. He has the same supplier as Saxby I suspect. I have little sympathy for the idiots who buy this tat, but really he belongs behind bars. Jerry 2 Quote
