You know,   sometimes,   just sometimes, I could slough off all the crap that comes with being an older person nowadays,

and just go back to the simpler times when the tales of the wonderful Noggin the Nog was all you wanted....or needed.....

Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin really knew what they were doing....extraordinary people.....

I hope you avoided Captain Pugwash - roger the cabin boy was a most unwholesome command.

When I was young it was a proper noun. None of this lower case nonsense.

And the number two was Master Mate, not Master Bates !!  I think that's how the urban myths originated - the guy who voiced the cartoon did quite a nasal tone for Pugwash and so Master Mate on occasion did sound a bit dodgy!  From there it was just a matter of time for the myth to spread and grow.

All good fun, though!

I notice Seaman Stain and Master Bates have already been mentioned. But cast your mind back to the 90's and the goalkeeper David Seaman - what was the name of that striker? - the only one who could lob Seaman from 25 yards?

Hell of a skill, that one !!!

Nayim.

Or rather, Mohamed Alí Amar, known as Nayim, a Spanish retired professional footballer who played as a central midfielder. He scored a last-minute goal for Real Zaragoza in the 1995 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final against Arsenal, with a 40-yard lob.

So, he could lob Seaman from 40 yards! 😄

Here's the snopes article - this was just an urban legend that made it into the papers.

I know, along with Master Bates and Seaman Staines - but they're still good jokes even though untrue!
