I am looking for information on auctioning coins.

I have a number of likely lots mid range - c £200 reserve, 1/4d, 1/2d, 1d. A better example is an 1869 1/2d in AUNC.

I have used LCA with mixed results and was wondering about others, DNW, Lockdales etc.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks

I tend to use DNW - I have found them very reliable, and their identification and grading is far more robust than LCA. I have not used Lockdales or any other Coin specialist auctioneers yet, so I can't comment on them.

I've always looked on Lockdales as being a bit of a provincial auction house, definitely second tier.

I can't speak as a seller but as a buyer, I think that DNW are the current leaders - their website and pictures are excellent, they conduct business on the internet and so command a larger audience, and their delivery service is as good as any. I'd imagine they pay their vendors promptly but have no experience. They answer emails promptly and responsively.

I agree with all the above. DNW are by far the best. Very smooth, professional organisation.

Also very pleasant to deal with when you contact them by phone - you get an intelligent, coherent person with whom you can have a normal conversation with. Increasingly rare these days.

I agree that I like them best, but as a seller? I don't know what they would charge for 200-500 quid lots, and that is the question. Baldwin's is likely not the choice for those calibre  of lots.

Lockdales is fairly local to me and in the flesh inspection negates useless pictures.

Dan Daley of Lockdales used to be pretty sound, as was Stephen Lockett (the "Lock" in Lockdales) but I'm not sure he has any interest in them these days.
