Bernie's can be seen here Dave. Finally found it.

Not quite UNC, but certainly a superior specimen for this exceedingly rare variety.

Please see the Gerald Jackson (ex-Spink) specimen that is by far the best I have seen.

Where can that Gerald Jackson specimen be looked up, VS?

Had to increase the size from 23kb, hopefully it still looks ok

I knew many of these would go for a song but was strapped at time of sale though did get the 1869 that was much better than the pictures..

I've heard that most of the pennies in that sale were better than the pictures.

Fantastic collection Mark and yes your probably right and one of the reasons some were good buys.

As rare as the above coin is rare looks cleaned from the picture and a variety i would not buy .

If its been worked on would cast a doubt :)

With the coin being in such excellent condition,  you can quite clearly see there is definitely a no H. Plus, of course,  it's the right die pairing.

As I said the picture does not do it justice, and it appeared ORIGINAL & not tampered with. I vote it a truly great coin - probably will ever regret not being able to get it.

The coin that I recall from that sale was the 1908 matte proof penny.  Should have bid, but didn't.

Pete / Richard, the dot between the I and A of GRATIA has always been present on all 3 examples of this PT italic 5 type which I have ever owned. Attached are pictures of the example retained in my own collection.

It is also interesting that the exact same 'dot' obverse seems to have been paired with an OT reverse. Close examination of the location of the date numerals, in particular the protrusion top left of the 5 which appears to be part of an underneath 5, give me confidence that I have correctly identified this to be the case..........date picture attached for information...........which appears to be a slight variation of Gouby Style Ab.
