Peckris is right, the House of Lancaster is descended from John of Gaunt the younger brother of the Black Prince so they are Plantagenet's. Johns son Henry Bollingbroke overthrew and probably murdered Richard II (the Black Prince's son) and took the crown as Henry IV. The House of York is even more difficult to understand, but they are basically descended from the 1st Duke of York Edmund of Langley another younger brother of the Back Prince. The main Plantagenet line died with Richard II.

Found another error with the latest ESC last night, the standard George IV are listed on pages marked "Pattern Crowns" spent 15 mins searching for the No of a 1822 crown until I realized what the problem is. However even with the faults it is, along with Davies, an invaluable book for the silver collector.

Sorry DrP but a capital i for a 1 was pretty normal for that coin in that period. The missing prong is also normal as the dies got old and blocked up. I'm sure one of the penny/farthing masters will be on soon and correct me if wrong.

The 2 indentations are caused by someone experimenting with hardness testers the round marks are caused by a Rockwell hardness tester and the triangular by a Vickers hardness tester, you can look up both in Wiki. I suspect some Engineering students playing around in the lab! Phill

They must all be nuts, he clearly states it's a copy, and his pretty bad photos clearly show "copy".

If you look up "Silver Dipping" on the forum you will see some experiments of mine with soaking a very similar coin in olive oil.

I would give it GVF/NEF.

Probably German Silver then (Copper 60%, nickle 20% and zinc 20%).

It could be a coin commemorating Titus's 6th Consulate, issued during the reign of Vespasian hence having his bust.

I think it's Vespasian, he had his 6th Consul in 75 AD, Titus had his 6th in 77 AD when Vespasian was still Emperor (69 - 79), also Titus's bust wasn't quite so ugly. However after saying all that the inscription COULD read, starting at 5 o'clock going anti clockwise, T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANUS, which would make it Titus, but the T CAE bit is very worn and I can't make it out very well.

Would be very happy to have any of them in my collection especially the 1787 6d which looks, to my untrained eye, to be a gem.

You could leave it on a sunny window sill shiney side up that might naturally tone it, but nothing will bring the matte finish back and the crispness of the original engraving on the obverse.

When I was a kid just before decimalization we would always check and compare our pennies to see who had the oldest we quite often had Victoria Veiled head ones but I can never recall seeing any Bun Head pennies.

The reverse is stunning, the detail in the lions faces and I could almost reach out and touch the harps breasts, UNC maybe even proof, but as Nick says the obverse looks like it's been polished.

My 1976 CYB has only has the 1970 and 1971 listed so the 1972 can't have been issued prior to 1975.

Everyone I've checked, about a dozen, have been to the left, so they haven't been released to the West Country.

The top one is in such poor condition, very hard I think I can just about make out a seated Britannia, I think, so it will most likely be a copper or tin penny/halfpenny or farthing. The obverse appears to be facing right so that would be James II, William III, George I or George III. But it is so poor condition it might not be any of that or anything, sorry.

If it weighs 7.98 grams and 22mm dia then it's a sovereign, if it's 3.99 grams and 19.5mm dia then it's a half sov'.

I think Tony Clayton's 15g is a bit too round for a country still using grains, so I think his figure is a best estimate. I note that CCGB gives a reading of about 7.3g for a BoE 18d so doubling that would suggest about 14.6g for the 3 shilling. I suspect that the official reading was never recorded so the best we can do is take the readings from as many coins as possible, add a constant for wear against grade and come up with a best figure.
