1901 narrow date penny 10.5 tooth. Gouby Aa he didn't even have a picture to show in his book. I picked one up last week after looking for about a year, unfortunately its only about VG, but at least I do now have one. Its obviously rare, but just how rare, do any of you know as it never seems to come up on here ? Terry

Now I guess your all going to think i'm a lying towrag , but during the 1960s I was given some change in a shop , some pennies, I think a trupenny bit and a shilling, I can't now even remember what I bought , but when I looked down at the shilling, I thought it was old, now at the time I was about 12 so lots of the coins to me were very old , as pre decimal coinage was still in use going right back to Queen Victoria. Well the coin had a hole in it , and was indeed old as it was dated 1696 with a king I did not recognise . I guess it was used by mistake. The shilling is still in my collection, though not readily to hand , as I collect pennies. Terry

I bought this from a friend a while back, who is a collector, but not of pennies. I guess its about GF which for this rare type seems to be exceptional . In all the years I've been collecting the only better one I've seen is Garys [Bronze & Copper on here]. its strange that this type seems prone to wearing badly in the centre of the Kings head.

Talking of what was, and was not released into circulation , during the war my mother picked up in change a brass 3d piece, which to her was just a 3d bit to spend ,she at that time had absolutely no thoughts at all of coin collecting , as after all there was a war on and she was a teenager with thoughts only of spending money . Anyway, she just glancing at the coin and noticed that the tails side was different to the normal 3d, being as she said, different with more of a stylised design than normal , but then gave the coin no more thought, and passed it to the bus conductor to pay for her fare . Well, many years later , after starting to collect coins, she found out about the Edward viii 3d piece with the stylised reverse, and knew that was what she had held in her hand all those years before , she felt sick, thinking if only I had known of there existence at the time, and if only she had turned the coin over she might have noticed that it was an Edward viii 3d, and not the George vi . I believe these were all pattern coins, and were not supposed to be released into circulation. God knows what there worth today, maybe one of you on here has one , let us know. It makes me wonder what may have passed through my hands without my knowing about its rarity . Terry

Hi Geoff. We have discussed this before on the forum . look in search = [1958 half penny variations] 23rd Jun 2016. all of the broad rim coins I have found all have longer teeth, and if I my add, that I have found a total of four differing types, so yours being a broad rim short tooth type would make it five types . The other consideration is , are you certain your coin is the widest rim type . I trust that makes it as clear as mud. See the post and compare yours with them. Terry

Well Richard I can't find any of these open Ps among my 1861 to 74 coins, it does seem to show that there are an enormous number of variations made to a more or less similar design during the first three years of the bronze coin production. I guess many more are still out there to be discovered . Terry

P.s I have only ever found the P to Tooth Rev. Gs on 1861 coins , none of the subsequent years to 1874, but then you out there may prove me to be wrong. Terry

Yes Richard, with some Obv. 4s ,and they normally also have the 6+1 in the date, closer together than on the normal Rev.Gs, Just found the Obv 6 and the 6+1 are wide apart . Terry
