  1. Welcome. Plenty of attractive coins in the shilling series, but as others will also tell you, buy the best condition coins you can afford; for 20th century coins I would suggest at least EF and preferably uncirculated . Every coin has to stand on its own merits. And don’t believe what Ebay sellers tell you, learn to grade coins for yourself and be genuinely critical. Buy a copy of ‘Grading British Coins’ referenced at the top of this page and published by the forum owner. And get to a coin fair when practical, the Midland Coin Fair may be a couple of hours but a worthwhile day out and you will learn a lot. Best of luck, and don’t be afraid to post your acquisitions here. Jerry
  2. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1865-Penny-in-almost-uncirculated-condition-amazing-example/313444385579?hash=item48fabdc32b:g:jIsAAOSwkG1gQ1Mt Fake, fake, fake. And some-one has even bothered to tone it. Jerry
  3. There does seem to be a packaging error with the proof set, maybe there is some confusion due to this? https://www.royalmint.com/our-coins/ranges/annual-sets/2021-annual-coin-sets/the-2021-united-kingdom-premium-proof-coin-set/ See the note at the end of the description. Jerry
  4. The seller tells me that he has been notified of its rarity and withdrawn it for further investigation. Maybe it will reappear in a different guise? At least it doesn’t appear that he has been ripped off. Jerry
  5. Sadly the coin has just been pulled, and my bid cancelled. ☹️
  6. Don’t worry, you are forgiven! These things happen, and we move on. Jerry
  7. The number of watchers has jumped from 2 to 8 since Martin’s post, presumably mostly forum members! Jerry
  8. This is a really unhelpful post during an active auction when I and possibly other forum members are already bidding and watching. By tradition we do not post in a way that can affect others interests in ongoing auctions and I am most disappointed. We normally save comment until the auction is completed, and due time given for the lot to have been posted, other than in the ‘worst offerings’ scenario. Jerry
  9. Now that is really tempting...count me in, subject to date and ‘her indoors’.... Jerry
  10. The penny seems much more handled , centrally tarnished, than the others; I suspect it is an interloper to this set. Jerry
  11. Unlikely; I can’t see it, and also don’t think they would have had need for a ‘U’ punch in the first place if preparing or repairing the die. Jerry
  12. Well, the slab is interesting; seems they are a new slabbing company, in the early stages of development. https://www.facebook.com/UKCG-Coin-Grading-Service-106479238102082/ To me the coin is probably genuine, but not a ‘touch piece’ of course. Jerry
  13. Yes, it’s awful! This is what it should look like. https://www.christophereimer.co.uk/medals/Oliver+Cromwell,+Battle+of+Dunbar-1 Jerry
  14. I too bought a couple of lots, and found a nice selection of oddities; I am sure Hiram must have been aware of these. Remarkable that one bulk lot had not just one but two D* obverse 1860 pennies, and they do seem to remain rare. I did show a selection here. http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/12193-penny-acquisition-of-the-week/?page=52 I agree that proper cataloguing could have made a substantial difference financially, though I’m not complaining. Jerry
  15. The fraudster who made this ‘sixpence’ caught that ‘morning after’ feeling perfectly! Ah, I remember it well.....oh no, I’ve forgotten! Bring back our pubs! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coin-sixpence-uk-1829/284164234670?hash=item4229821dae:g:atEAAOSwu9NgEteg Jerry
  16. Aww look, this little penny’s blushing in embarrassment at the bollox written by its vendor. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-Of-The-Rarest-1971-Pennies-in-the-World-1p-New-Penny/353369299252?hash=item5246739934:g:qucAAOSwKepf0mS8 Jerry
  17. It’s the standard beaded penny obverse, Freeman 1, Gouby C as used with Freeman 1, 6 and 7 pennies. Jerry
  18. I really don’t know why they even bother....... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRITISH-RARE-OLD-METAL-DETECTOR-FIND-SHILLING-OR-LARGE-PENNY-SIZE-UK-2-COIN/124547364181?hash=item1cff99f555:g:TIAAAOSwqKZgEapN Jerry
  19. Sorry, looks like I have two copies of part four...so if anybody needs one....which is what you wanted, badgerap? Jerry
  20. I’ve just checked, yes, I’ve got the five parts, what do you want to know? Jerry
  21. Give us some background, Craigy! There are a lot of fakes around, often this black colour. If an EBay purchase from Poland, definitely suss. If found in a field with a detector, worth a closer look. Any provenance? Can you weigh it, a rough guide only as nibbled, and any chance of a better focussed pic? Jerry
  22. Splendid! I have a several old tellies that I rebuilt a few years ago, Bush TV22 and TV62 from either end of the fifties, and an early ‘50’s small Pye set. I also have a couple of ‘60’s sets as future projects. And a 1940’s HMV that needs a new 10” tube- anybody got an Emiscope TA10 spare? I have an Aurora standards converter, used to watch old Tom and Jerry cartoons in B&W, it’s the only way! Jerry
  23. Yes, I saw that, does look right, well done. Jerry
  24. I only really started looking at them with lockdown, so early days. Between us we should ramp up the prices! Jerry
  25. It may be rare in top condition, though I doubt it would reach your criteria overall. Here are my two, though the second might already feature in your records having once been sold by LCA I think. Jerry
