Looking closely at the 2 and what possibly underlies it, I'm wondering if it's been 'dropped in' over (perhaps) an 8. But then again, that would be far more work than removing the H ? Yes I agree with clearly the last digit of a 1888 penny has been carved to look like a 2. It would be far more work but will look authentic as people will be focussed on finding the H as opposed to looking at the other possibility. Everyone is aware of the 'rubbing the H away' trick so here's a new technique that's becoming popular

Hi Gary, Thanks for responding. Been under the weather a bit so could not respond earlier. I have attached 2 more pics one of reverse and of the coin side by side with the obverses showing of this coin and a normal Gouby C. http://i.imgur.com/rEAxYJu.jpg http://i.imgur.com/rghabDj.jpg Thanks for the help. I think this has been the case for a few months now, but isn't restricted to bunheads. There will always be a restricted number at the top of a pyramid, so 1 or 2 players cutting back must have an effect. When the best known pieces are struggling to take off, you know the end really is nigh - but we haven't got there yet. Another point if I may add is that in Jun the pound was 1.74 to the dollar now it is 1.49. So that's like a 15% drop. All the good coins have been in the auctions in the States and naturally buyers for GB coins from this side of the pound are capping their high bids. Problem is the long term outlook for the dollar is bullish so interesting times ahead

1863 one penny confusion, help please :)

There is a slight difference where the lower half of the coin is slightly bloated but this is difficult to pickup unless you see a few open 3s in the metal -

Simplest thing to do is to take a high res pic and to expand the 3. Draw a straight line on top of the serif extending outwards with the open 3 it will extend outwards without touching the lowing arc of the 3 http://imgur.com/Aprx102,im6ZGZ1 http://imgur.com/Aprx102,im6ZGZ1#1 HTH -
Yet another penny I have been studing some of my beaded border pennies and I came across this strange one. It is not a Gouby Obv A or B as the bust is clear of the beads. Yet I am not certain it is a Gouby C either because it has a very thick rim in comparison to all the other beaded obverses that I have (8 or 9 in VF+ condition) Though the first 10 or so beads below the bust seem to stick to each other the linear circle terminates only after the 3rd bead below the bust so it can't be a C1 either. Could I have missed something? Please provide your valuable input. Any help much appriciated. http://i.imgur.com/yn16k61.jpg Prax

I too think that was precisely the case. I have been following the pennies and many of the Pennies from the Forest Gate sale made it Heritage. Not only did the buyer of those bargains at the Forest Gate sale not settle with the killing he made there. He listed many of those in the Heritage Auction and made another killing by starting many his coins with a reserve greater than what he paid for at Forest Gate (remarkably many sold) http://coins.ha.com/c/lot-image.zx?saleNo=3037&lotNo=29748&lotIdNo=141084&inventoryNo=303729748&id=12053042 https://www.spink.com/lot-description.aspx?id=320001024

Oh dear!!!! Oh dear!!!! Can anything be far from the truth David, I just tend to follow the coins I have handled. One of the reasons I love to grade my coins. With the 1882 no Hs it was easy. I looked up the CGS population report, which was 3 in this case. I know that one of the no Hs is an XF coin http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=131&searchlot=2055&searchtype=2, so I knew rightaway that out of the remaining 2 I graded the one. I also knew I was among the first to grade pennies, the rest then falls into place

Good Evening All, Been doing a bit of digging and here is the info that I found on the CGS 1882 no Hs There are 3 CGS graded no Hs Graded CGS 3 – UIN - 0002837 Graded CGS EF 60 – Sold LCA 06/12/2010 – Lot 2055 The one on ebay currentlyI have handled a and almost certainly c as well though I did not grade coin c). I have to dig up my notes on the other coin. I was involved with grading just one 1882 no H, which at that time was a washer with some verd (possibly on Britannia’s arm and Vicky’s neck) Here is a brief history on a) since I purchased it. Purchased on 03/06/2007 LCA 1198 - £ 700 Graded on 14/08/2007 Sold to Mog a coin dealer in Bournemouth – 22/02/2008 - £ 800 Mog sells it to an unknown buyer from Windsor – 14/03/2008 Unknown buyer sells it on ebay - 28 Apr 2008 Coin is offered on LCA 01/12/2012 – lot 560 and sold for £ 800 No idea what happened after that but it looks like LCA purchased it and it is now available on their site for sale http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=retailv2_details&uin=0002837 Prax

Help Id reverse on 1910 ed penny?
Prax replied to MACKSILKY.'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The tide does look slightly higher. Is that the difference? -
Back then verdigris was not a problem - I meant to say "Back then verdigris was not a problem on really low grade coins". I recall a 1865 penny that had the minutest spots of verd was flagged up during inspection and I was warned that it may not pass grading standards. So I did not book it in for grading.
-
If I am not mistaken I might have had this coin graded (because I graded a 1882 penny which was in similar grade and there are only 2 more of this date graded). I sold this when in 2009 I quit pennies and sold a huge part of my collection to invest the proceeds in bullion. The point to stress is that this coin and a 1861 6 over 8 that I had graded at pretty much the same time were pretty run down when I bought them. Both had verdigris and they both graded (albeit at very low levels). Back then verdigris was not a problem, this is going back a good 5 or 6 years, it was more about establishing CGS as a brand. I would doubt if these would grade if you took them to CGS for grading today. To give you an idea back then the 2 coins graded in less than 3 weeks and I gave 40 odd pennies for grading. 20 for an encapsulation only service which cost £5. I don't think they have an encapsulation only service anymore. It gives you an idea of where CGS was at back then.

1983 two pence labelled as a New Pence, the undated 20p, 50p of the EEC, 50p of the Olympics, 50p of the Kew Gardens. There are many error coins but each is unique so look for things like spelling errors.

Couldn't agree more, regardless of denomination or year ... But it's what they go for! Is it any different to a two-pronged trident?I do confess it's not for me, unless I was close to gathering the whole series of something, and a particular coin got added into an addenda or revised edition of a book, or similar, as a definite type? But this wouldn't happen to me, as I have an interest in too many areas...fortunately! No, two-pronged tridents are just as silly. Unless it was engraved using a specifically intended two pronged trident, then it was just a defective tool. Although discussed before, this opens up a whole can of worms because you then have to consider the various development stages of the variety raising the salient point of when can a variety be said to exist? How do you price the intermediate stages and why are they so defined? Die fill and breakage are two continually evolving states which are virtually impossible to quantify until complete, or the die has fallen apart setting the maximum limit. I suspect the main driver for including a variety in a price list is the owner and definer of said variety. Finally someone who feels like how I feel about varieties. I felt the same way when I first came across the fish tail or the dot pennies. However as most people have pointed out the future drivers of penny variants is die anomalies and tooth spacings. Personally I would not bend backwards for variants but when I come across a penny that is XF plus and is a minor variant I can’t resist That said I am also guilty of going after low grade BP1890Aa http://imgur.com/0M09dzx

The 1922 came with a mega premium. The 1902 was affordable (£40 on top of the cost of a AU lowtide).

Goodeve All, Acquired a 1902 and a 1922 filled 2 in date pennies today. I am aware of the filled 2 in 1922 but the 1902 is new to me. Here is a pic of the 2 filled along http://i.imgur.com/K7DtYJI.jpg side a normal 2 penny http://i.imgur.com/fzaqwA1.jpg. I have compared about 30 1902 pennies mostly in VF grade to the new specimen (which is a low tide) and did not find any which resembled the filled 2. On a related note does anyone have a recent sale price for a 1922 filled 2 please? Regards, Prax

Very well said. Things a looking a lot better than they did 12 years back. These days I havee been able to spot errors with the catalogues and ask for a refund than to put the coin away only to find a few years later that the auction house had made a miistake. Even with the last Spink auction I was able to spot and return this http://imgur.com/a/DXLbE listed as a low tide. Makes me nervous how many more horrors there are in my collection which have come about due to my previous 100% faith in auction houses, their grading and incorrect description. -
