Easier to see what you've bought and when you bought it or how much you paid, instead of trawling through one thread and many other peoples purchases. Pretty common having a thread for your own progress in many forums. I like the idea, and it's good for people who can't necessarily set up their own site to keep track of what they've bought (not saying you can't Mynki). I don't know why it would be a contest though.

I was thinking about the slender 3 the other day, is this the highest price paid for any bronze penny? Why did it go so high was it just a case of the bidders on the day having the money? In any case, a healthy sale for you Prax so well done, was it a find from circulation or unattributed buy? Or just bought as a slender 3..

Agreed. Can anyone give credence to the part about the 'sulfite paper' causing the cabinet toning effect? Sounds quite interesting, but I don't know much about natural toning or whether what he's saying is has any validity.

No I wouldn't pay a lot for one, so not fussed in having one in high grade. There's also some sort of oil slick on the O in ONE. If I'm honest I prefer the colour on the one I just bought to this higher grade one. It only cost me £1.45.

I imagine once you work out how to use it, it makes sense, but I still find it a little difficult. There is a reserve setting, it says 'Reserve not met' on that coin you posted (just under the time remaining on the right)

True, but how many rarities exist in the period around 1860? I can think of more right now that I can count on both of my hand, whereas the rarities of the 'modern era' are far and few between. While there might be less collectors, there are far less different rare examples to be had. Most of which are not that rare but still fetch a little premium, the undated 20p, kew gardens 50p (which the RM unecessarily blew out of proportion IMO). Pete, off the top of my head; - undated 20p - kew gardens 50p - 1983 new pence 2p - Aquatics 50p with waves over the face - (a little less known) 1992 10p with 1 point to bead (broad rim) I'm sure there's a couple more

I'm pretty sure Chris (Perkins) sold one last year for just under 1000, then included it in that year's edition of Collectors' Coins. Also the penultimate entry in this RM blog mentions it.

Yeah, they decided against the waves going over the face after a few (hundred?) strikes, changed the design to get rid of the waves then recontinued production.

I think you can get them in both the set that Brian originally posted (Great British Coin Collection) and also the Heinz Beans set.

That's also an interesting theory, perhaps when the sheets are rolled out the copper/tin is being pushed down more so than the zinc? Still quite a bit of detail on that reverse too

Not sure, it's quite a common problem on the coins around these years, when they still have lustre they tend to be a little 'streaky' (the affected ones) but once it's dulled and has a bit of wear, some of them come out like this. The one I've had for a while is the same, but only on the obverse! I think that's what interests me more, is that one can only guess as to what happened, there's no definitive answer AFAIK.

An 'upgrade', if you can call it that, of something that I find quite interesting, I like the theory behind expending the brass shells into the alloy mix after the war. One of the most affected ones I've seen.

Nope, and it's one of the one you'll notice that some of the heavyweights don't even have, and if they do then it's anywhere near as good condition as the 1916. What puzzles me is that the LCA one was listed as a recessed ear, but in their population report there is not even a variety for it to be filed under. Just one entry for 1915, but 2 for 1916.

I agree about the 1915, extremely harder. Only really nice one I've seen was an LCA auction, but that's a great one.
