Rare but how actually rare is it?????
Nordle11 replied to bhx7's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
True, but how many rarities exist in the period around 1860? I can think of more right now that I can count on both of my hand, whereas the rarities of the 'modern era' are far and few between. While there might be less collectors, there are far less different rare examples to be had. Most of which are not that rare but still fetch a little premium, the undated 20p, kew gardens 50p (which the RM unecessarily blew out of proportion IMO). Pete, off the top of my head; - undated 20p - kew gardens 50p - 1983 new pence 2p - Aquatics 50p with waves over the face - (a little less known) 1992 10p with 1 point to bead (broad rim) I'm sure there's a couple more -
Yes what a first coin Mynki, it actually looks nicer in the pictures you've taken (for me at least). Good luck on your journey into spending all your money on coins We look forward to some more stonkers like this!

I'm pretty sure Chris (Perkins) sold one last year for just under 1000, then included it in that year's edition of Collectors' Coins. Also the penultimate entry in this RM blog mentions it. -

Yeah, they decided against the waves going over the face after a few (hundred?) strikes, changed the design to get rid of the waves then recontinued production. -

I think you can get them in both the set that Brian originally posted (Great British Coin Collection) and also the Heinz Beans set. -

That's also an interesting theory, perhaps when the sheets are rolled out the copper/tin is being pushed down more so than the zinc? Still quite a bit of detail on that reverse too -

Not sure, it's quite a common problem on the coins around these years, when they still have lustre they tend to be a little 'streaky' (the affected ones) but once it's dulled and has a bit of wear, some of them come out like this. The one I've had for a while is the same, but only on the obverse! I think that's what interests me more, is that one can only guess as to what happened, there's no definitive answer AFAIK. -

An 'upgrade', if you can call it that, of something that I find quite interesting, I like the theory behind expending the brass shells into the alloy mix after the war. One of the most affected ones I've seen. -
In the same boat, had more losers than winners over the years as I'm sure many have. All part of the fun and as long as it's not too expensive I'm happy to take that punt every now and then. Sorry I read it wrong, thanks for clearing that up

I didn't buy it, but I did sell it. It was the same one as this one below that I posted in this thread. It's a little difficult to see in hand and without a bigger picture, so I wasn't very happy keeping it in my collection under that classification. I decided to re-list it as a normal 1922 penny without any mention of the dot. It might be a dot penny, but the wear is too significant to be conclusive, at least in my mind. What do you think of the picture I posted here when I first bought it (which was a BIN at 10 pound)? I was lucky to be able to risk it at a low price, but I re-listed it at 99p and made no mention that it 'could be a dot penny'. I'm not buying coins to make money, let alone deceive people into paying more. The picture is from my iPhone and I didn't do anything to it, no light trickery or attempt to make it look like something it's not. Should I tell them it's not one, re-list it and then write "THIS IS NOT A DOT PENNY" in the description, because I'm actually not even sure myself that it's not one? I know your comment wasn't directed at me personally but I was a little disheartened by it because I specifically sold it without alluding to the "dot", so as not to make people think that it might be one.

There's a genuine one up for sale in the next LCA auction if you want one for a direct comparison. 4th from last coin I think. -

Nope nothing out of the ordinary. It's nice to have a big die crack on one side and a lamination error on the other, both quite substantial too. -

No idea, the caching is already off on the forum. It'll be something to do with individual computers, you could try to clear the cache to see if that works but after that I have no idea
-
I thought it was a caching problem (computer related, as opposed to forum related) although if it's happening for others it might be the way the forum is caching your data. I'll have a look when I'm at a computer and see if I can do anything about it.

Possible pound coin variant?
Nordle11 replied to 1949threepence's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Glad to help It's weird they've added a pattern around the border though, could it be a legitimate production of fakes for some sort of novelty use? It would make sense if they're adding 'copy' on the coin (at least in Tony Clayton's one it has it) -

I was looking at this - the penultimate image on that page. It has the little sticky out bit the same as in the picture. -

Don't suppose it has the word 'copy' on that extra little bit behind the Queen's neck does it? -

Ok, here is the change for the First Unread Post. On every thread in the Unread Content view or when just browsing the forums, there is now be a blue button to the right of the thread name. If you click on it, it will take you to the first unread post in that thread by you. Enjoy! -
Thank you Bernie, a couple of areas on it that will benefit from a little TLC but very happy to add one to the collection!

Thanks Pete I keep having that same problem too, previous posts stay in the message box and it's a nightmare trying to delete the quote boxes. I think it's a caching problem because I can't find a way to stop it..
-
Probably not all too exciting for most of you who have had one for an age, but I've been waiting to pick up one of these for a couple of years now. Another box ticked!
