  1. If the part at the bottom is raised, it's a cud, otherwise possibly a lamination error. I have absolutely no idea what happened to that 1 penny though, I can only guess at a lamination error. if it's genuine that is a stonker. Love the square parts on the obverse!
  2. No one was talking about buying anything, she was asking for more information on a curiosity she found Also, these aren't poorly struck coins they are grease filled dies, what thread are you reading
  3. As they say, patience is a virtue three found is pretty good going, here's the pics and here's the link for close up inspection.
  4. I like what you did there
  5. Rob has a pretty nice 1901 @ £35
  6. Just to add, Pete was showing me some slabbed pennies using the UINs and pictures the same as the one's CGS are showing, but when he took pictures for me on his phone it shows how much the CGS pics are letting them down, they look much better in his own close up ones. Suffice to say, I wouldn't doubt what he says in that it is nicer than the pictures show!
  7. Also I'd add that the 1901 examples have some of the best strikes on both the rev. and obv. and you can probably pick a nice one up for 20-30 quid without trouble. I'd agree with Mike about the '90 + '91 and Pete's offer is a very good one.
  8. I remember seeing that for sale on eBay a year or 2 a go! Great skill
  9. If it was a very faint H, it would not have been worn over time in the case of your coin because the date numbers would have been in higher relief compared to the H, this means the date would've worn down before the 'faint H'. As the numbers on your coin are not as worn, there would still be a faint H present. However, it is possible as many have suggested, that the H on the die became completely filled and struck coins with space under the date completely flat to the field. Whether or not this will show up an outline of an H on a high powered microscope is something someone needs to check, but it would be far better with a higher grade example to be more conclusive.
  10. Congratulations Colin! And welcome back
  11. I think Rob was referring to Alfnail's picture regarding the hint of an H..
  12. Wow what a coin! Thank you for sharing, as far as I knew Richard's was the best known! For the sake of longevity (in case one day the link stops working) and for easy reading, do you mind inserting the photo into the thread? Will happily do it myself too if you're only using your phone or something
  13. Easier to see what you've bought and when you bought it or how much you paid, instead of trawling through one thread and many other peoples purchases. Pretty common having a thread for your own progress in many forums. I like the idea, and it's good for people who can't necessarily set up their own site to keep track of what they've bought (not saying you can't Mynki). I don't know why it would be a contest though.
  14. Very interesting post, thanks Prax. I've only been collecting for a few years so it was interesting to hear what you've said. Would also love to see an UNC open 3 if you do have a picture still.
  15. I was thinking about the slender 3 the other day, is this the highest price paid for any bronze penny? Why did it go so high was it just a case of the bidders on the day having the money? In any case, a healthy sale for you Prax so well done, was it a find from circulation or unattributed buy? Or just bought as a slender 3..
  16. Thanks Nons, that answered my questions
  17. Agreed. Can anyone give credence to the part about the 'sulfite paper' causing the cabinet toning effect? Sounds quite interesting, but I don't know much about natural toning or whether what he's saying is has any validity.
  18. It looks like Victoria's nipple has slipped out What is that, a die chip or something?
  19. That was quick haha, but they're 50 quid raw normally, so with a slab it was a good price!
  20. Haha, bag chatter, what great term for it
  21. Yes I believe they do, the eBay listing I put up earlier has the streaks running in the same direction.
  22. No I wouldn't pay a lot for one, so not fussed in having one in high grade. There's also some sort of oil slick on the O in ONE. If I'm honest I prefer the colour on the one I just bought to this higher grade one. It only cost me £1.45.
  23. This one is pretty streaky!! Both sides too.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1920-Great-Britain-United-Kingdom-Penny-Graded-by-NGC-as-MS-62-BN-/321990656555?hash=item4af823822b:g:YlgAAOSwpzdWqG1f
  24. That's a good point also Nuts. I also noticed that Peck mentions the same theory of brass shells at the start of his write up as well.
  25. I tried it but find it really difficult to search or make a search through the categories. There seem to be hundreds of links on the left, sorted by days? I imagine once you work out how to use it, it makes sense, but I still find it a little difficult. There is a reserve setting, it says 'Reserve not met' on that coin you posted (just under the time remaining on the right)
