    I didn't know about it, although it's not a circulating currency version so wouldn't be on the radar. Having said that, I would like to see an actual picture of this coin because I can't for the life of me find one anywhere with 2009 written on it.

    I think I've worked out what he means. The last time it was up for auction (Spink 2003) it was sold with a 1967 OMS. As per the description: Elizabeth II, Mistruck off-metal Pennies (2), 1966, struck on a foreign brass flan, possibly Jamaican, 1967, struck on a smaller diameter foreign flan, therefore no rim. I think the description has just been lifted from there and amended incorrectly, as the rim is very much present on the 1966.

    That's what I was looking at too, but it didn't mention the 2009 version of the athletics 50p.

    I see, thank you for clearing that up Sarah. Although as a non-circulating currency there are a plethora of coins the RM has minted which only have a mintage figure of 1000 or 2000, perhaps this is why the non-circulating 2009 50p is not worth as much as the kew gardens one which can be, although very unlikely, picked up in change.

    I found the thread you originally posted in, I notice the guy you're talking about recommended us. Wonder who he is on here? He did suggest a name in the field to contact, if you want peace of mind maybe get in touch with him too?

    Oh wow. So not only are they introducing a fee, they're trying to push people out who don't send more than 30 coins throughout the year.. Not only that but if you then click on 'Find an agent', it tells you this;

    Sounds like he certainly has a good grasp of this series! I'm not too sure about casting signs but the obverse wear is a little bit strange. Help will be on it's way soon, but in the form of opinions just as this guy has given. Never ignore anyone's opinons though! Perhaps it's the scans, but perhaps he's right...

    Hi and welcome. It would seem strange if it has been certified by a grading company (although they do make mistakes sometimes) and put up for sale by a reputable auction house. Did this 'someone' give any indication why it's 'probably' fake?

    Fully agree. I've never slabbed a coin and I've still had the displeasure of dealing with Semra. Definitely a big con of dealing with either LCA or CGS, let alone paying £99 to deal with her.

    I suppose, but at the moment I don't get many opportunties to do historical research on provenance mainly due to the coins I'm buying, so I don't mind too much! I get that for you it's more frequent! Although I know that Steve definitely has the information available, so any you do buy (if you do) he can probably shed a little more light.

    Any ideas on what is meant by "struck on a smaller diameter foreign flan, therefore no rim." (Lot 213)? The reason I ask is because although in the CC picture on the obv. it looks as if there is no rim from about 5 o'clock to 1 o'clock, looking at Steve's pictures the rim is fully present..

    I've a complete 50p collection bar the new Beatrix Potter example so did the homework and searching, the only ones I had to pay more than a couple of quid for were the Kew gardens (luckily bought before the hype) and the UK Chairmanship of EEC (1992). And once or twice a day is once or twice a day too many to be getting calls about people's 'rare' 50ps

    According to OP, Coin Yearbook says 100k, Spink is noting 100k and 'Guest Sarah' says she contacted the RM who said they issued only 19k? None of this makes any sense to me.

    Where are all of these references getting their mintage figures from?! As far as I'm aware, and according the to RM, they minted over 2.2 million of this design.

    I don't think you actually get a confirmation, just a notification if you're outbid. Good to double check the lots you've bid on though just in case!

    Yes that's me and Chris (another error collector who used to post here). We usually end up bidding each other for the same errors. The last LCA there were a few so we had an agreement on which we would go for so we didn't just bid each other up haha, unfortunately only the one in this auction so it's a free-for-all.

    As far as I'm concerned, that's neither matt nor proof. This is a matt proof 1908 (and looks like one too);
