Advice on coin prices for a newbie?

Following on from the last post... If a coin is graded correctly, what would you say is the lowest grade that shows nice original detail of the coin? (from old head victoria onwards). Browsing the coins for sale on the net, I like the look of any EF grades, NEF ect. I have also seen some nice looking GVF coins. Anything that is VF or less seems to start to lose the smaller details and not look as nice to me. Is it really more individual coin dependant? -

Thanks copper, I was actually looking at a 1901 UNC penny yesterday, as my potential next purchase Not rare at all, but a great way to get a high grade example of that particular series. Yep, and well within my budget, which is good. I have decided to take some sort of direction with my new collection, rather than just buy coins here there and everywhere! I am going to try and get as many examples, preferably UNC, of different denominations (made for curculation) of each monarch. To start with I am going to go back as far as Victoria (old head) as these seem to be within my price range, although I will have to start saving now for the more expensive coins! There seems to be a certain year of each denomination that is affordable in UNC condition, so although I may not be able to get the rare dates, I think it will be nice to own lots of different designs of coin. Then from there, I can chose which ones I like the most, and try and expand in that area -

That is the one! Thanks pies -
I was directed to a very nice website of a forum member, it showed their penny collection.. could someone post the link for me please? I would like to bookmark it to use as a reference. Thanks!

No problems for me, I use the free version of AVG.
-
No problem! PM me your details and I will pop it in the post tomorrow for you, be sure to let me know what it is Put it on ebay USA and maybe get a few pennies for another coin that you'd like... I hardly think it would be worth the hassle listing it on eBay to make a couple of quid, it is not a problem if you would still like it, just let me know.

I am going by my mums interest in photography, she spends alot of time taking close up photos of insects, birds, plants etc. If you have the funds, you can not beat a top quality camera for capturing what an object "really" looks like, so I would say a photo is better than a scan. When shooting, you can get a beautiful close up picture by using some sort of stabilizer for the camera, and as it is of coins, you can use a cheap lamp or similar to get a nice light source if you need it, this should show the natural lustre etc. While saying that, if it is not too much hassle, you could get your scanner out and spend a little time taking scans and photos of your coins, this would be the best way to be sure which is better, as a quality scanner will probably be better than a pants camera!

That is interesting. I thought myself it may of been a halfpenny or farthing, but the shield on the reverse is slanting to the left. The only pictures I have found on the net, similar to this coin and date show the shield slanting to the right. Hopefully azda can can confirm what it is after he has had a look at it. Google evasion coins. A large proportion of the Geo 111 copper listed on ebay are evasions. The two rarest evasion coins are dated 1777 or J77J and are worth millions. Seriously?! Your not pulling my leg cause Im a noob are you?

Is this true for the coppers made before 1992? I just read it on the net, what do you think they will be worth in 50 years time?.. I might start a copper jar! That is a nice mark up

I have a coin, which is of George III, the date looks like 1777, but I could not find any bronze/copper listed for this date, so it may be the J77J or similar. The reason I think it may be some sort of fake, or a token (I have no clue really!) is that it is extremely worn, the portrait does not look quite right. The beeding around the edges is non existent, yet you can clearly see tiny details like the lines in the hair. It is also extremely thin. Also, around the edges where it is scratched, there seems to be really bright copper colour shining throgh. It just does not look or feel right. Anyways, I can not identify it myself, and I think posting a picture will be of no use. I know it is probably worthless, but thought I would see if anyone has any specific interest in this period and would like to take a look at it, even if it is just out of curiosity. Let me know, and I will pop it in the post for you, free of course! If not, then feel free to let this thread die

Brilliant! Thanks for that Generic Lad, when I first started looking at coins I asumed that "toned" was never a good thing. I saw a couple like the florin pies posted, and my first impression of those was that someone tried to clean them, but only managed to clean the middle! I have much to learn. Sorry for highjacking your thread with that question pies.

What makes you think I haven't already "got going"? Way too much info! please start talking about coins again!

Nice coin pies! I like the look of Edward VII Florins, particularly where the cape seems to be waving in the wind. Noob questions: What is the cause of the darker parts around the edge of a coin, while the centre stays clean? and what is a coin with that called/listed as?

What Peter means is that he has a few mistakes to sell you if you're interested Then if you're still interested, I have a few mistakes for sale also Me too! Did I mention what a fascinating series the hammered shillings of Charles I are? And how examples can be bought (from me) for well under £200? Always pleased to help. So that is why your all so helpful.... you wanna sell me all your junk! You really think I am that stupid?.... Im interested... how much do you want?

Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing!! Your welcome! I wonder what other creative ways coins were used years ago. It is nice how a little hobby can capture your imagination and make you take an interest in random things like this.
