New Collector, looking for advice
Mongo replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi David, Welcome to the forum. I don't know whether anybody has mentioned this to you yet (I know it's one of John's favourite sayings) but buy the coin not its grade. When I was collecting I would try to get the best coins I could afford but always found that when upgrading there were lower grade coins I just couldn't part with. Whether it was that I liked the patina or something about the process of acquiring them, I know not but for example in a run of George V pennies mostly with high percentages of lustre, I had a VF 1922. Not particularly difficult or expensive to find in better grade but I just liked my old '22 and didn't see the need to upgrade it. I guess in a way this kind of personalises a collection and to my mind makes it a little more interesting. So by all means start out with the intention of collecting runs of coins in very high grade but don't be surprised if what you end up with is just that little bit different. I agree. Eye appeal and finding coins that just "look right" to you are the ones to collect. Don't let someone else dictate your choices. Best Regards, InforaPenny I notice you've been 'lurking' for a while, though have been a member for a few years. Your name and list of interests suggest you are a collector of bronze pennies like myself and a few others here. I for one would be very interested to see pics of a few of your more interesting coins if you don't mind sharing them? Feel free to start a new thread if you wish. How on earth would you know that? Actually, I only just joined the forum. Think they are referring to InforaPenny, Irish -

question re search default page

After saving the settings above, you should just need to revert back to the deafault homepage, this should be: Options>General, then just "restore to default" then hit OK. -
question re search default page
Mongo replied to Rob's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I use Firefox Rob, give this a try... At the top of firefox, next to the long search bar where you input web addresses, there should be a smaller bar to the right. Mine is currently "Google" with a little icon. Click the icon, then the "manage search engines" option, you should then be able to select "AVG" and then just click "Remove". -
Idiots collecting Freeman numbers

One word comes to mind.... $%^"£! This guy obviously has nothing better to do, judging by the length of the message he felt compelled to write. I think he needs to do these things to make himself feel special. Let it go over your head, John. He is not worth your valuable time! -
Delayed email notification of PM's

Sorry Rob I can't help with this one, the issue was resolved, or resolved itself, following a few others identifying similar issues! Maybe my inbox was full? I've deleted a few old threads, so that would eliminate a full box problem. Just sent you a test message, seems to of fixed it! -
Makes you feel pretty helpless! This is yet another occasion where knowing the actual buyer's user name would be so useful! Imagine emailing the buyer a quick link to this thread, hopefully getting it there before they paid? If the buyer is legit (zero feedback before purchase), it looks like they have already paid! If you check the sellers "feedback left for others" you can see who won it

Delayed email notification of PM's
Mongo replied to Mongo's topic in Forum technical help and support
If it helps Rob, this is what it says when trying to PM you... "The member Rob cannot receive any new messages" In regards to my problem... since your PM reply Richard, my notifications are coming through quicker! The last two were almost instant, so I think it fixed itself, weird! -

New Collector, looking for advice

Hi David! I am a newbie too. I have asked loads of questions on this forum in the short time I have been here, and have always had polite and helpful advice, even if the questions are VERY basic. Here are some links to some threads I started, where I had lots of helpful and useful advice, you may want to check them out: http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6797 http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6815 Here are details from some of the forum members who sell coins: http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6879 I also received the Grading British Coins Guide today, and it looks like a very good book! You can find it here on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Standard-Guide-Grading-British-Coins/dp/0948964839 I have only been collecting a short time, but I find the self adhesive 2 x 2 flips are a nice way to store your coins, as they protect them, but still allow you to see them clearly. TomGoodheart posted details about these earlier in the thread. -
None for me yet! I am determined to find myself the full set though

Delayed email notification of PM's
Mongo replied to Mongo's topic in Forum technical help and support
Not that I'm aware. I don't believe I've had any problems (but I only get notifications when someone pms me). I wonder if it might be your email system? Have you checked that it doesn't think there's something dodgy about predecimal.com and isn't filtering them somehow? Oh, and I replied to your pm at 17.20 today Fri 6 July, in case you don't get it until later and are interested to know when it was sent! Thanks Richard, That is strange! They are not being filtered by my spam folder. I use AOL mail, so perhaps it is a problem with them. When I mentioned replies, I meant to the PM's and not forum posts, if that is of any help. Sometimes I do not get any email notifications, other times they arrive the next day or so -
For some reason, I get my email notifications of PM's and replies up to 2 days after they are sent! Are there any settings to change this? I had a quick look, could not find any.

Now you are just showing off! Makes my spreadsheet look like something I done at Playschool! Lots of nice ideas for me to add now, thanks everyone. Like it has been suggested, the good thing about spreadsheets, is the ease of being able to add more columns as I need to. I guess recording the coins you have is all part of the fun of collecting! It's not a question of showing off, rather finding a means of recording the data relevant to your collection in an easily viewable and retrievable manner. As long as you have the ability to sort data, the important consideration is the number of fields you might need to sort. If you don't need to sort data, keep that in a file dedicated to the specific item. I know Rob, was only playing! It is amazing how many different details can be recorded for a single coin. A long way from when I first started collecting, I used to think a Penny was a Penny... Thanks to this forum, I now know to look closer!

There. I corrected it for you. Can he catch a fly with his chopsticks or do they get caught in his fly Spidey will catch the fly. I would go for EF too. Not right now... Spidey is getting fat from munching too many crickets!

This does not bother me, I have only purchased with PayPal recently, but... I sold one item on eBay last week, and received a PayPal payment for a tiny amount (under a fiver). All is ok, item sent and received, feedback all ok, then today I receive this email: We're writing to let you know about a change to your PayPal account. Starting 04/07/2012, money from payments you receive will be placed in a pending balance for up to 21days. By doing this, we're making sure that there's enough money in your account to cover potential refunds or claims. Even though you can't access the money right away, please send orders quickly and communicate with your customers. After 21 days, you can withdraw money from each payment as long as the customer hasn't filed a dispute, chargeback, claim, return, or reversal. The money may be available sooner if: We can confirm that the item was delivered and 3 days elapse. This gives the buyer enough time to review the order and file a dispute if necessary. Your buyer leaves positive feedback. (Applies only to eBay items) This change isn't necessarily permanent. We'll review your account every 35 days and re-evaluate if we should continue to hold your payments. If we decide to stop holding payments, we'll email you to let you know. I thought this was a bit strange, but at the same time its ok, as I would only ever sell something for a few pounds here and there. I just done a quick google search, as you do, and came accross this article from CNN stating that eBay/PayPal are rolling it out to ALL sellers! http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/02/24/ebays-got-a-paypal-problem/ I also found this link to PayPal's own community forums, where there are hundreds of posts from unhappy sellers. Most of them seem to be since the start of 2012. https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/My-Feedback-for-PayPal/Funds-Availability-Feedback/td-p/424987 Hopefully it is just rumors, but I thought I would give any eBay sellers on this forum a quick heads up about it.

Thanks guys! Most helpful, as usual I was thinking of using the "Description" column for some of the details you suggested, so an example would be: Farthing, High Tide, Big Nose variety, sexy legs issue, Darkened, Spink 99999999.... etc.. I may do the photo reference too, but will have to wait until I get a decent camera.

This part of the forum looks lonely! I am starting a spreadsheet to record my coin collection. Hopefully this will make it easier for me to check dates, grades etc. so I do not buy duplicates as my collection grows. It should also help me, when the time comes for those "upgrades" I hear you all talk about! What details are helpful to record? So far I have started out with: Monarch, Date, Description, Grade, Date Purchased and Price Paid. Would anyone advise of anything else?

Collectors Coins GB 2012?
Mongo replied to Mongo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Oops! I just noticed the sub section for discussion on books, sorry. Im such a numnut -
I just read an old thread about a 2012 edition being published. Does anyone have any idea of the release date for this book? I was going to buy the 2011 edition, but if the new one is out soon I may wait for that.
