What date, time, Peter?

Not a problem for me pies, I can "sort" any of the columns whenever I need to, with the click of a button!... by date, denomination, grade etc. and also by denomination + date. That is one of the good things about a spreadsheet

There are no dates on coins until Tudor times, but it's often possible to narrow down the date range from the Spink type. I'm no expert on hammered types, so someone else will have to identify yours more closely. Thanks for the quick reply Peck. 1279-1307 is fine for my spreadsheet, I just wanted to be sure there was no definitive list somewhere, of exact dates. Not a problem at the mo... as I only have the one hammered coin!

I am in the process of making a record of all my coins. This question is probably a long shot... but is there any way to narrow down a date for hammered coins like the one I posted in this thread? or would it just be 1279-1307? Thanks

Thanks again, your right. I thought that just after I posted last! Seems pointless to add lots of description where it is not needed. I will use my Spink to find the details of each coin, then pick and choose parts of the descriptions as needed

I just wanted to throw this out here, and say a BIG thankyou to everyone on this forum. A few months back, I got myself a 2008 Spink book, and thought that would be enough to keep me out of "trouble" with my venture into coin collecting. Then, when I started to google search for online coin shops, I stumbled accross Predecimal.com and found my way to this forum. I am so glad I did! I know I still know nothing when it comes to coins, but the advice, help and knowledge you have shared with me has really made my new hobby an enjoyable one. You have given me the confidence to go out there and feel comfortable making decisions on grades and prices. This is really important to me, as even a £10 coin is a considered purchase for my limited budget. I have now made purchases from a handful of dealers who use this forum, all of which are lovely people to deal with. This has allowed me to take my pick from the vast amount of quality, accurately graded, fairly priced coins you all have for sale. With each coin I buy, and every question I ask, I feel my education is increasing. I hope that one day, I will be able to repay you with some coin advice of my own! So once again, thankyou all so much for your help and advice, I really appreciate it! P.S. No bottoms were intentionally kissed during this forum post, if you feel you have been a victim of bottom kissing, please pucker up and pass it on to someone else!

Thanks Peck. I found out when I tried to use Excel that I only had a trial version on my PC! I had a Microsoft Works disc handy, so I am using that. It is a basic version of spreadsheet software so I am still working out how to use it, pretty straight forward though. I had a browse through my Spink book and it gives a good description for common coins, such as a 1936 Penny it describes as "Small bare head l, R. Brittania Seated r. date in ex."... That sounds a bit better than my description.. "Bronze" I will use the spink descriptions, then add my own for the variety column, as some are not listed in spink (the Q's on the 1887 shillings for example). I may aswell get it right now, rather than have to go back and do them all again later. What is a typical description for a common coin in your database Peck? It might give me some ideas.

Thanks Rob! You are right, rounding up or down to the nearest pound will probably even itself out over time, and still give an accurate estimate of the purchase total.

Lots more coins to add, but this is how I am getting on at the moment. The "?" are coins that I need to decide a grade for. I am thinking about rounding the purchase prices up or down to the nearest £0.25, just to make things easier. What do you find easiest when you get a discount... divide the total discount between the number of coins in that "lot", and then take that amount off each individual coin price?

If you don't adopt any of my other suggestions, then at least add a "Variety" column - you may come to regret not recording this separately right from the start (you can always leave it blank where there aren't any). Ok boss! I have added a "Variety" column. I was going to put variety in my description, but you are right, I have noticed already that certain coins need LOTS of description! This will make it easier for me. Thanks Peck.

Thanks guys. I added a "Source" column as advised, this should keep me busy for a while! I will have to invest in a decent camera soon, I can scan my coins, but they never show the natural detail and eye appeal.

I cleared out loads of shrap last year.Amongst other tat we cleared £250 in 2 1/2 hrs and then spent £50 on lunch on the way home.The remaining £200 was split 4 ways. I did have a wander around the other tables but it was junk.Someone did leave their medical eyepiece on our table...which was nice. You done well there Peter! I sold lots of stuff from a stall when I was young, most of it I wish I had kept now... my Star Wars, Action Man, Thunder Cats, Ghostbusters, Beano and Dandy, He Man! I think I made around £80 which was nice at the time, but all that lot is probably worth a few hundred at least now! That is what puts me off, all the junk I would need to explore just to find a few coins, which will probably always end up junk grade anyway. I might just take a wonder down one Sunday when I am bored and see how it is.

There is a weekly boot fair less than a minutes walk from my house. I have not had a look around one since I was a teen! I might go and have a rummage soon Has anyone here ever found any coins of interest at an old fashioned boot fair?

There are some forums that trample over newbies who dare to post without first getting a Masters degree in their terms and conditions and FAQ - happily this isn't one of them! That's so true. I will freely admit to never having read any of the faq's, terms, conditions or anything else on this site (I assume they exist somewhere)! Thanks for all your replies. Helpful as always! I am not planning on trying to haggle every coin I buy. If I see a nice coin, but think the price is a bit higher than what I would happily pay, I may try and get a little discount, just to make myself feel better about the purchase. I have received kind discounts and freebies from several forum members already, with no need to ask! which is very nice. It is more the face to face encounter I wanted to ask about. I have found a couple of shops that deal in coins, not too far from where I live, so just wanted to check the etiquette before I jumped in and asked for a best price.

Is the haggling of coin prices acceptable practice? I have been thinking about this for a while, and being a newb did not want to offend any dealers or embarrass myself. I suppose this question comes from the fact that there is often haggling of "antiques", so an old coin could also be in the antique bracket? Not for tiny value coins, but for say a £100 plus purchase, what are your thoughts and/or experience on this?

I started to catalogue my coins today, I must say... It is another really enjoyable part of the hobby! I decided to go for a basic spreadsheet for now, one which I can expand as I see fit. I decided on: Monarch, Date, Denomination, Description, Grade, Spink, Date of Purchase and Purchase Price. It is easy to add a description for most coins, but I struggle when it comes to coins such as a 1936 Penny for example, my description for that is "Bronze"... I can not think of anything else to write! It is fun studying my Spink book and deciding what details I want to record for each coin, like my 1926 Shilling which I describe as "First Effigy 500 Silver". Also, I did not realise I had aquired so many coins already... My collection is coming along nicley!

I lose things all the time! I am sure it will turn up, keep looking
