Thanks threepence. As a rule I only put in a bid equal to what I would pay for a grade lower than listed... when it is a dodgy photo, or I am unsure of the grade.

Thanks for going into all that detail Peck, it is heplful to know the exact points to look at! I just had my amazon voucher delivered via email, so have just ordered the Guide to Grading book. Should be here in a day or two! I will post some photos tomorrow. My camera is not the best, but maybe you could cross reference the photos with the scans and help me to nail down a Grade for the coin

Lol I know where your coming from. I started on Edward vII florins then got a few of his shillings then a couple of vickys shillings then a couple of Edwards sixpences. Now I've just bought a Charles 1 sixpence You're all crazy! He says having also bought a Charles XII today, when he should be keeping the cash for his other coin 'research'! Apparently, if you call it research, you can justify it to the other half! God knows what I shall have to come up with for the Charles XII? I am ok on that front! I dont live with the bird, yet, so I will make the most of it while I can

I have ordered myself a x30 loupe, hopefully this will help me in educating myself to grade more accurately... Trial and error I guess! Have you bought the book on grading? and yes don't be too harsh on yourself with grades.Bag marks are acceptable on UNC coins. Your 2/6- is welcome a home at Peter Towers. I am very jealous! only yesterday, I started looking in to metal detecting for beginners, I google earthed my local area to see what farms were close by. A 16C mansion detecting session sounds like a fun day out! Good luck, I hope you have some interesting finds

I have two NEF Eddie farthings in the post! I am all over the place at the moment, just when I said to myself "right! I love shillings, I am going to collect them for now"... I went and put in an order for a handful of nice grade farthings! Its all good fun

I then saw an EF example that did not look nearly as nice to my eye, even though I could clearly see more defined detail. Being new to coins, I first thought well it MUST be better, as it is a higher grade. I think I am learning now, that if I like a coin, then the grade becomes less important

I took a gamble on an auction with a poor picture, this was listed as UNC. I stuck a bid of a tenner on at the end, and won it for £8.50. The coin is bright and shiny, especially on the reverse which has very nice lustre, and there is some tiny wear to the high point of the cheek, the scan does not really show these things. My attempt at grading would be EF+/GEF, I know it is difficult from the quality of my scanner, but what is your opinion? Thanks!

As I've said over and over, a learning resource like this one is worth a dozen books and more. Having said that, you then need the books! But hooray for you, great stuff. Your thread's really inspired me! The resources, the books.... but I also need the money! I thought the 1887 shilling would be a good place to start with something like this, as the prices are affordable for me. I am also looking into the Old head Victoria farthings varieties, with the help of Colin and his Aboutfarthings site!

As a newb, If I were to spend that kind of money on a coin and find out it was a fake, I would not be a happy bunny! I think it is nice that I have the chance to come here and ask about anything, or any coin I am not sure about.... Unless you are all in it together, and selling the forum numnut duds!
