  1. Did you hear the one about the dyslexic agnostic insomniac? He lay awake all night wondering if there was a dog.
  2. Yep, not seen this post yet Richard?
  3. While ESC is quite out-of-date for much of it's relative rarity assessments, and omission of varieties discovered since it was last published, ESC reference numbers are still widely used ... if you can pick up a copy cheaply I definitely would (I got a copy of eBay 18 months ago in fabulous condition for under a tenner delivered). If you get into varieties of modern silver or bronze (predominantly 20th century) then I would recommend David Groom's books on these (he is a member on here and kindly signed my book on silver varieties)
  4. Welcome along Sweep! You might be interested in perusing Accumulator's penny collection - it's very impressive! (I am not a penny collector myself, milled silver for me!) Accumulator's penny collection
  5. Thanks Pies, don't you hate it when you discover scratches or other blemishes for the first time when you photograph the coin! This is exactly why i take hi-res images and post here, so that others may find something i have'nt seenCoin 5 is EF, digs on the OBV, Leaf veins worn, REV left hand thistle has wear along with part of the crown, could be GVF at this rate (sorry) you know how harsh they are That's ok Dave, I am well aware they are not all top grades - coin 5 is probably the lowest grade of the 6, I umm-ed and ahh-ed about sending it to them!
  6. I agree with Clive, stick with Windows 7. 8.0 wasn't well enough thought through, 8.1 is good for touch screens, Vista was dreadful.
  7. Thanks Pies, don't you hate it when you discover scratches or other blemishes for the first time when you photograph the coin!
  8. Coin 6 - 1893 Florin
  9. Coin 5 - 1821 Sixpence
  10. Coin 4 - 1821 Shilling
  11. Coin 3 - 1906 Shilling - Dies 2A?
  12. Coin 2 - 1899 Crown - LXIII - Dies 3E?
  13. Still strapped for cash, so sadly parting with some more milled silver. This batch I have deemed worth getting slabbed, anticipating that the extra cost involved will be more than recouped in higher-than-otherwise selling prices - my experience with this over the last 15 months or so gives me confidence that that will be the case. Some will go to eBay, others may be private sales. So once again I invite your comments and speculation as to the CGS grade they might assign, traditional non-numeric grade if you prefer, varieties, problems that might result in rejection, or anything at all! Coin 1 - 1902 proof half crown
  14. Thanks, I'm sure you are right Rob
  15. Spink lists no varieties for the 1687, but does anyone think there is something 'going on' with the '8' here? I know there is often something 'going on' with early milled, but I thought I would ask, perhaps a known variety not listed in Spink? I am rubbish at imagining what other number may or may not be involved! I would have this reverse at GF, any other opinions?
  16. Shaped? Aren't they both round? Do you mean it is smaller than normal? What's the diameter?
  17. Vigourously
  18. Just as long as there's no 'rim nicks', everyone hates those!
  19. I agree Pies!
  20. I have in my collection this very acceptable (imo) Matt Proof (imo) shilling. It is slabbed by CGS as AU but with 'field damage', they don't give any details ... can anyone spot any problems with it?
  21. PM sent
  22. Quite so. This is 'Items for Sale', so although he hasn't (yet) contributed elsewhere, he's got the right to post here. If we don't buy, maybe he WILL try eBay next. Quite right Peck, let's be welcoming! And it is a pre-decimal coin too!!
  23. Welcome along, umm ... 'Old Groat' ! It looks okay to me (from the pics), do you have any cause to doubt it?
