  1. At various price points there seems to be some irrational upward pressure on realised coin values at auction in the last few months, in many if not all markets, I could very well be wrong ... any dealers care to comment? I have no empirical evidence, just a sense of increased demand and price inflation? Happy to be shot down!
  2. In my very limited experience (just over 5 years), that is one of the best tips you will ever receive
  3. My comment was merely that this was the highest priced coin I had seen sold on eBay, probably not a record though, and that for zero cost eBay have a very nice commission on it! Any take on whether the buyer got a it for a good price, I have no idea!
  4. One of the biggest eBay coin sales I have seen, and maybe (?) shows that specialist items can be sold through this channel, I have no idea whether the price was a good one for the buyer or seller though ... it sure was for eBay!
  5. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141205256170?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648 (it was at £7k ish when I posted)
  6. Nice coin Paulus! Thanks, that one won't be going any time soon, even when I pare back to one nice example of silver milled per monarch! Ticks all the boxes for me!
  7. Yeah, don't think it works, I like to show my coins in the post like this!
  8. I love Declan's suggestion and 'homework'! Knowing how to grade, and what appeals to you are key, I think, but starting from zero you might be amazed how many 'decent' coins you can get for 50p to £10 even going back 2000 years to Roman times! So dip your toe in the water at minimal cost with a range of coins, reading, and coin fairs, would be how I would do it 2nd time around. I made a few mistakes at first as do many/most, and in a sense that is part of the fun, but you don't want these to be too expensive! I think there is a fairly regular coin fair in Harrogate, the next one being 2 weeks' time, and probably the nearest one of note to West Yorkshire: 21st - 22nd March 2014 Swan Road Harrogate North Yorkshire HG1 2SR Oh yes, and there's Wakefield as Peter just said!
  9. No sorry if that's how it reads. The value as is now £110. My point was it should not make a difference to customer service whether the coin is worth X amount, but they have missed out on my future dealings as it could of totalled to the £1000's.If you want Bill to read your post it might be better to PM him you complete initial post as this will go to his email I noticed Bill was logged in to the Forum yesterday ...
  10. Fantastic, thanks JPK, I had been told that it 'commemorates' the 'rape of the Sabine women' by Roman soldiers? Where would be the best place to sell them and what would be their approx value, any idea?
  11. Thanks JPK, I have that as S 456 seeing as it's pictured in Spink! what does AR mean, silver? Looks like I have pictured the reverse (?) upside down! Just over 2,050 years old!
  12. Pop 'em up here. We'll do our best. I have some experience with Roman though far from expert. Okay well I have 2 silver Roman coins, they are both the same size. I have a few ideas about what they are, but I won't say anything about them, I'll just wait for any comments! 1st coin:
  13. I have tried that, that's when I get the error. That is the method I use for my pics on Photobucket, just that it seems a more long-winded process with Photobucket.
  14. It works fine for me, have you put the photo in your one drive? Yes, and I get a msg that the file extension (png) is not allowed on this forum, the same file works from Photobucket. To be clear, I want the pic to appear embedded in my thread, without anyone having to click anywhere
  15. JPK, are you well versed on English Roman silver coins, if so I would like to run a couple by you?
  16. Thanks Colin, but I can't get that to work!
  17. Does anyone know whether it is possible to embed a 'direct link' to pics on One Drive (was SkyDrive) into posts on this Forum? i.e. the kind of link where the photo appears in the post without readers having to click anywhere. I am hoping so, because uploading to OneDrive is so much quicker and easier than Photobucket, or similar free online photo hosting sites I have tried. Google searches haven't revealed the answer so far ...
  18. Did you get that CGS 82 1902 Crown you craved then Dave? I hope you did!
  19. Yes, a very warm welcome Tom!
  20. Welcome along Fletch! I would echo others' comments, and add that you might want to grab one of these 1970 proof sets from eBay. You can normally pick them up from an auction for around a tenner delivered, tremendous value for what they are I think, and will help get you acquainted with pre-decimal Liz II coinage: link
  21. This was the one Peck: link
  22. Hi Arthur Welcome to this great forum! One type you may wish to consider are Conder tokens, issued in the late 18th century ... I find each one to be a very interesting and affordable piece of British history. They are mainly halfpennies, and can often be bought for £5-£10 in lower grades (certainly up to VF). A good thread for you to look at might be this one (although most of the examples depicted here are very high grades): http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/8342-lets-see-your-copper-coins-tokens-or-medals/
  23. Yes, I agree with you. I don't really collect decimals myself (apart from a representative collection of proof sets and BU sets), but there's no arguing that that 1983 2p is THE major modern rarity, unless the aquatics 50p rivals it for numbers. So you won't find snobbery here about it. Having said that, if you asked me if I'd rather have the 1983 2p or a really high grade William III halfcrown, I'd go with the halfcrown every time No contest for me neither, just a no-brainer!
  24. I went to visit Downies in Melbourne when I happened to be there on business, showed them the fake Northumberland shilling they had auctioned and they proved to be worse than ignorant about it (examined it in hand and declared it as genuine simply because it wasn't a high enough grade to be a fake!). Their shop sold only modern tat, I wasn't at all impressed, but to be fair they did arrange a full refund when I had it rejected by CGS A reality check is overdue for them (a comment that might apply to other traditional auction houses too, as has been noted!).
