Welcome Paul, absolutely, we're a pretty friendly bunch I think and like nothing more than ID-ing coins from pics!

The major auction houses and slabbing companies should be playing a part here. Each time they reject a coin as fake, pictures should be stored in their online archives clearly labelled and searchable as such. What are the legalities about owning a fake or submitting it. Could the TPG before returning it take a metal punch and stamp a great big F in the middle of it. There's nothing illegal about owning a fake, and of course there's nothing illegal about sending a fake to a TPG. However, as TPGs' reputation rests on their 'authentication', you would think they have, or should have, an up to date archive of all known forgeries. And if they do have, it should be made available to everyone. Perhaps, like the BNTA, they have a misguided vested interest in keeping the information to themselves

Chris, can we have a sub-forum for fakes please? I guess it's up to you whether the content is only available for members, but at the moment it is all over the place and available to the public, as I think it should be. Dave (Azda) makes a good point - and if the (forgers) hadn't made a schoolboy error of 180 degree rotation on the 1818 HC they would be even harder to spot. So pointing that out to them results in better forgeries perhaps, but I think on balance it will help us keep ahead of the game. Thoughts please, this is threatening our hobby.

Further to everything that has been said and posted on the topics of fakes and forgeries on this forum, it occurs to me that it is beholden to US to make it easier for people to check if they have, or are thinking of buying, or selling, a known dodgy one ... I have been very lucky, and have got my money back on all coins so far identified as fake that I have acquired over the last 6 years or so (mainly thanks to this Forum)... but it stands to reason that I may have others I do not know about, and other members may have too ... I guess I am mainly talking about modern (non-contemporary) British coin forgeries here, and there are not so many that we couldn't deal with keeping it up to date with our collective knowledge ... Thoughts please, I think we should own this and deal with it, no-one else is doing so!

Do you mean purely numismatically? In her shortish reign there are silver varieties that promote (perhaps dubiously) a naval victory (VIGO), reflect in the design the union with Scotland in 1707 (by combining the shields, and including an E and E*), and the usual plumes and roses and plumes (denoting silver obtained from Wales and the West Country) - but you probably know all that?

I have never bought from them personally, some very nice looking high grade coins judging by the pics on their web site though! If i'm not careful I will end up spending money I don't have (again!)

Hi Goom, there are some very nice coins in the DNW September auction (that I am eyeing too), but if you are keen to acquire your first very high quality example sooner there is plenty available with top dealers (some of which Nicholas has linked to) ... as always it's a matter of what appeals to your eye, and your budget and grade targets. If you want to avoid rare dates and varieties (as I do), I have no idea of your budget, but rascoins (see link above) in particular has some very nice Anne for sale at the moment (his 'current list' is always littered with items that have already been sold, but I like his 1707 R&P shilling personally. Or perhaps the 1703 VIGO sixpence? - I am commenting on the appeal of the coins (to me), not the price)

He's taken it down ... who is it then Damian, it appears to say 'Maximinus' in the lettering? Looks like S 531A to me, it's even pictured (in Spink 2013) so one of the easiest to attribute I would have thought? And Salus is seated!

Where is it flagged as a possible fake Gary?

I don't mean anything by this, apart from astonishment at the price it is selling for, but at the end of the day, this is no longer a G3 Crown coin, rather a nicely engraved silver disc (with all due deference to Debbie!). Surely this sort of thing is open to modern reproduction? link

Except that George and the Dragon is not British in origin - is it Maltese or something like that? That may well be so, but the US market will associate it with the UK surely, and would have done back then too?

It's another great token from BRG, I'm just wondering why they would want to use George and the Dragon on a US merchant token - or am I being stupid, perhaps back then, as now, links back to good ol Blighty were good marketing?
