This particular seller's grading is usually way too high. You need to replace the word "virtually" with "nowhere near" and it will seem more accurate. Just have a look at the "choice high grade" 1905 florin that he is selling. He grades it as about EF, whereas it is much more like VF. If that ...

Definitely a pass Simon and I would echo the advice given so far. Hammered coins span many hundreds of years (far longer a period than milled coins), and every one is unique ... although collecting in this area can be very affordable, it is not something to venture into without knowledge or advice, preferably both

Rob, I have, very politely, asked the seller for the tracking number, so that I can take the 'loss' up with Royal Mail. Answer came there none. I'm not holding my breath. My initial point wasn't so much the methods for chasing up the seller, but more that for reasons I can't quite fathom, I 'knew' this was going to happen. All sorted now with ebay refunding my payment, all within an hour or so of raising the complaint. Negative left for the seller, who is now at 87.5% positive. Lordy, that's a VERY low feedback rating!

Rob, I have not sent the excellent Charles I lightweight shilling I acquired from you for grading (or any of my hammered) ... it is cherished and (carefully) handled without a single coffin in sight! But I do agree with your point about relative scarcity affecting whether CGS will grade a coin with defects, and with Prax's point about their standards having changed over the few years they have been offering the service ...

I'd love to know if those fields,in-hand, are as proof-like as the photo makes out? He's a bit clever with the camera!I confess I've never bought a coin from Buck that I'm unhappy with, and his delivery service is very prompt! However, his communication is generally rude, when he finally bothers to respond at all! Notwithstanding the fact, the coins never arrive with that ethereal 'light-toned-lustre' look that his 'golden-hued' photos always portray. I do believe he could make a soil-found 1967 penny look like it's just come out of the purse of the Virgin Mary! I don't know if you are viewing on your aye-Phone Stu, but I don't think the coin looks proof-like at all, or BU, in the fields or the detail! I too have been happy with the coins I have bought from Buck in the past, but only after allowing for some routine over-grading and the fact that his photos always have that golden hue, as you point out ... This is the reverse pic of the coin he describes as BU, and sold tonight for £541 ... my observation is simply one of surprise that that coin sold for that price, presumably based only on the pics and description!

I have found no problem with eBay visibility, it always seems to list items as selling soonest by default, and if I change the criteria that always seems to work too ... items matching my criteria selling on other international eBay sites are always at the bottom of the page, however
