Welcome Et Tu! If genuine, that is a half groat - the 2 pellets to the right of the bust denote two pence (half a groat) My guess is that it is a low grade genuine example of a half groat

One good reference book on Charles I coins is Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles (SCBI) Vol 33 - The John G. Brooker Collection My favourite period is pretty much the whole of the 17th century

I do not any longer regard these as coins of the realm, I see no difference between these and some tat produced by Westminster or The London Mint Office Yes I know they are 'approved by the Queen'

Chris' group is designed to test the RM's narrow definition of legal tender - so far no-one has posted that they have been able to pay court fines with these coins! And yes, virtually nowhere to go!

I collect predominantly milled English silver types, with sidelines in Conder tokens and broad copper and bronze type examples, I've been branching back as far as Tudor hammered a little, and starting to dabble in proofs too. Excellent advice given above, they key distinction will be that between buying English coins because you like them, or because they interest you, as opposed to buying for investment. EBay or a Facebook Group for world coin collectors may be the best way of selling the world coins you do not want. Have fun out there and ask anything you like on here (with pictures) before making big buying decisions

I hope you will forgive my novice-like question on these - I am relatively new to proofs, only having started taking an interest over the last year, and the literature I have does not seem to give much detail about them, Questions seem to arise on this Forum frequently regarding is it or is it not a proof, are any perceived hairlines from the dies or post-mint, and what is the difference (if any) between Specimen and Proof. So I have on approval this 1902 matching Matt Proof set, which I like. I would assess the coins as 'virtually as struck ((but not fully FDC), problem-free, and matt proof'. I am running it past you guys as part of due diligence. They come with a matching Maundy set and the original box, which I have not pictured. Any input very gratefully received what are your thoughts @VickySilver?
