Edward and London for the first. Coinery will no doubt appreciate a chance to hone his skills narrowing it down further!Second, Henry II or III (?) Moneyer ILGER ON LVN (London) so my guess is Henry III. Looks like a possible Class 6c (Spink 1355) to my untutored eyes but more likely Class 8, Spink 1357 ... Maybe Clive can confirm or deny? . Only just picked this up! Unfortunately I haven't enough literature to accurately cover the Edward III period but, in view of the ANGLIE legend, I'm going for a transitional penny! S1612, N1227If I was buying or selling this coin I would want to read more about it first, but Edward III penny definitely! Edit: hah! I don't know if anyone has the 2013 Spink, but I'd wager the obverse plate coin of s1612 is very likely from the same die? Spooky!

The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins

And that's a great example for the period too! I like it, though! -
Goodness, that IS a shame! Idiot!

Hi Tony, these are very typical low-grade coins, which would be worth very little unless there were some rare varieties in there, which would be highly unlikely to be honest!

The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins

It's a great book, NV, and could only get better by an expansion! Just about everyone on here has a copy! It's definitely a good starting place for any debate on grade! Edit: the author is a member on here! -
Yes, welcome, NV! And what happened to all the copper fans for JiB? A couple of years ago that would've been debated for weeks! ?

It's incredibly well done, I love it! One of the better ones I've seen! You going for it, Debbie?

Import VAT Bill £59.54 on £150 item?
Coinery replied to Coinery's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Cheers TG! Tummy rubbed...NO! Copper..."Pull!" -
Still charged you a grand, though, and you couldn't get it back by PayPal! AND it was pewter...taught you the old Skool way by hurting your pocket! Now write again... I will not buy a fake coin ever again! I will not buy a fake coin ever again! :) Viva la forum!

With bagerap, but totally understand where you are coming from! You've already done a good job in sharing him as a villain here! No point in waving the 'here I am' flag to someone who's probably quite pissed off about the whole thing! You must remember, he's probably already spent that money down the pub...now he's got to go short next week to pay it all back to his overdraft! Tee hee!

What, there would be many years of research discredited by either one of your findings being accredited? edit: maybe a little simplistic I grant you!

Whoever you are Kal, welcome aboard, this is the stuff we all love reading about! I can't believe you don't know Rob already, or pretty much the entire coin community, as your posts are hardly 'newbie' in quality! Don't mind Dave (just in case he joins in), he just loves coins! Joke, alright?

I must be repeating myself too often. No, I just knew it would ring your bell! I'll be ringing it too someday, when a new financial story unfolds before me! I do love the siege coinage!

I was waiting for that!

Import VAT Bill £59.54 on £150 item?
Coinery replied to Coinery's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Isn't that just crazy? In the silliness of this whole thing, I could well imagine a situation where I might be charged duty on the potter's riverside studio too, AND the chow mein his wife cooked for him that evening! -
Import VAT Bill £59.54 on £150 item?
Coinery replied to Coinery's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Actually it is hand-made in a studio! I must check whether it's signed? Though, hmmmm...I wonder how much hassle and paperwork I'd have to go through to get a partial refund on this basis? This Buddha is the female incarnation, so I can go with the belly rubbing for luck! And £10 next time? It would be my luck the thing would go missing and I'd lose EVERYTHING...bar a tenner, of course! -
Import VAT Bill £59.54 on £150 item?
Coinery replied to Coinery's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Yes, that all calculates out correctly! £150 item, weighing 8kg and costing £75 to post, will cost you a whopping £60 to take receipt of, when Clearance Fees are included! Unbelievable! Thanks for the link! -
Import VAT Bill £59.54 on £150 item?
Coinery replied to Coinery's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Thanks, TG! Crikey, that's just ludicrous. I'm amazed they can also levy it against the postage which has already been paid in full! Goodness me, he'd better not send me anything else! He assures me that they pay no import taxes at all in Hong Kong! I truly hope he's right? -
Is anyone better in the know about these things? I've just taken delivery of an item from Hong Kong (a ceramic Buddha), marked as a gift by the sender, and marked with a value of £150. I've had to pay £46.04 Import VAT and £13.50 Clearance Fee, a total of £59.54, nearly 40% of the value of the item! That can't be right, surely? Cost the guy £75 to send it, for goodness sake...going to nearly cost me that to take receipt of it!

This is one of the major problems with any kind of social media, Facebook and the like, that a missed comma from a face we don't know can equal an offence equivalent to killing the neighbour's dog (not sure why a dog, maybe the neighbour, then?)! The point being, you do have to read between the lines, sometimes, even when online-communicating with someone you're relatively familiar with (in a cyber context)! I didn't read any malice in Dave's, or anyone else's comments for that matter, because, for me, it was business as usual in the way I interpreted all the different posts, by all of the different personalities on here. Perhaps some of the latter comments may not of been my own choice of words, and can see how easily they may have offended Fluke (though I think he flared, even before those comments) or others! But, speaking for myself, I would still prefer a diverse forum, provided it stays within reasonable social boundaries, that is true to the general mix of coinies we might meet in the real world. I'd say the general thread here had a good balance of individuals, with everyone offering an olive branch! Even the Scot (albeit his olive branch a thorny thistle), had a go, in his own special way! It'd be great to have you back, Fluke, but there are a lot of people on here...all of them will give you good advice, but maybe not everyone can wink at you, and chink your glass, to reassure you they are on your side! At least not all of the time! So, anyway, Colin has been on and shot us down with our cleaning theories which, just goes to show, you need to stick around, otherwise you'll never get to know who ways right about that! and this is the reality of a coin forum, Fluke! You going to have a glass with us all? We're not that bad! Honest! ? -
Let's hope they haven't got the 'intelligence' to notice this can work in reverse! Beware any large sales to this person! A general address would be useful, Paul? Are you able to access the return address from PP, just a street and town would do? Oh, and phew for you!

I still clearly remember my entrance onto the forum, right on the tail-end of the 'Bullion Smelting Saga,' which was as hot a period as I can remember on here! And quite innocently I joined to ask the question 'is it legal to smelt silver coins'? Oh, boy, did that bring the house down! My first knock-back came from Nick! I laugh about it now, and feel thankful I hung on in there...I would've missed a great deal otherwise! I feel certain Fluke will take a look in, just like I did...c'mon Fluke, it's a great place to learn! -
