  1. It hasn’t been photographed that well, to be honest, I would ordinarily stay clear of something that looks like that. However, I’d 100% take it as what it says it is coming from John...plus you could always send it back if you weren’t happy!
  2. Ah, yes, I agree, but there are many damaged examples that would lend themselves to this quite cheaply...plugged coins also spring to mind
  3. Just had a look...quite a pretty design, rather surprised.
  4. Oooooh, an Elizabeth I shilling, now that would be good in a silver case.
  5. That was the point of the post
  6. One to watch! https://davcoin.com/lot/printed-auction-38-lot-134?utm_source=Davissons+Ltd&utm_campaign=07b93ac9b1-a38-closes-tomorrow&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3777ece20e-07b93ac9b1-134878717
  7. Can’t remember what it was I saw now, I screen shot them and was looking at them in bed last night. Will take another look at them tonight after work.
  8. You’d think they would, wouldn’t you? We get scratch-resistant watch faces and glasses, can’t be that much of a challenge?
  9. First good argument I’ve seen for slabbing though, the scratches on that slab! 😲
  10. Very different dies to start with, though, yours looks to be cut in much higher relief to begin with...and/or earlier strike from the die too.
  11. Edward I 10cf2 for me, Paddy 👍
  12. Amazes me that he doesn’t just take them straight to auction? Seems such a shame for him to be giving them away on eBay!
  13. Hmmm, not sure I could trust a Scotsman with certain English coins...Lonshank pennies spring to mind!
  14. It’s in the right category, it’s definitely hammered! Great to find anything though, Josh, thanks for sharing 👍
  15. Amateur...you’re funny 👍
  16. I think logistically it’s an impossible job, especially at local auctions. The time it takes to wade through kilo after kilo of bulk lots makes it impractical for the auctioneers. I’ve tried it a couple of times and it’s not fun, so I totally believe they are, more often than not, virgin lots. Good things do lurk within them on occasions...Declan picked up a 1905 HC in a bulk lot as just one example.
  17. So very impressive indeed, given, I’m presuming, that the premier coins are not in private hands?
  18. I’ve only ever had one C1 crown that good, and I didn’t have it for long...they are serious chunks of silver, love them, as I do the C1 half crowns for exactly the same reason. Proper coins!
  19. https://davcoin.com/sale/Printed Auction 38?rpp=120&f[0]=itm_field_lot_number%3A[112 TO 124]
  20. Gets my vote for a 10cf m’friend! You’ve got the classic hole in the neck punch to cement it to the last period of Ed1 to the start of Ed2 and it’s not class 11! Would need to dust my book off to give you a number, but the elegance of the crown suggests it’s probably cf3? @davetmoneyer what’s your thoughts, Dave?
  21. Grade is complicated by that same big issue that affects hammereds. I think this is where the points system of grading works really well, because it considers so many other factors that aren’t just about wear because, as with hammereds, these coins all left the mint as individuals. All that being said, I’d be very happy paying NEF for it all day long, and the grading companies, using numerics, may well judge it better. The soft centre doesn’t bother me at all, it’s weak quarters I personally do not like, and it’s very well compensated by its other qualities. Lovely example! (yes, Dave, a lazy copy and paste from me! Time is precious )
  22. Re the flaws, there are definitely genuine coins out there with those flaws, the fakes were cast from at least one of them. I’ve had a couple of those fakes in the past and whilst they are good, they are not great in hand. The 8 o’clock flaw in the OP coin is very much sharper than the clear fakes...seller may have a point! Difficult to say without seeing the coin in-hand? It does look good though, in the images at least!
  23. I’ve got a couple of mint cupronickel and one copper coin that have been in these flips for around 10 years without change. I’ve never found any issues with the many hundreds I’ve used over the years either, I personally think they’re superb. One thing I have always been obsessive about however is cleaning the coins with pure acetone before sealing them up. For anyone who has ever run a soaked cotton bud around the outside rim of a coin to remove the gunk of a thousand careful fingers, you will already know the kind of residues you are locking away with your coins. This incidentally has always been one of my main issues with slabbing. I have broken out and ‘cleaned’ slabbed coins that have left cotton buds looking like they’ve been picked up off the floor of a garage.
