  1. One I didn't have either. I still look out for the 1887 pattern shilling by Bohem. The only one I know is in the Royal Mint Museum.
  2. Interesting. I had never come across other thin flan 3ds. I have a very thin 1944 3d. The normal 3d is 2.69-2.72mm with a vernier caliper. The thin 3d is 2.14-2.16mm.How thin is the 1956?
  3. Sold After the sale for £8000+ com.
  4. Sovereign Rarities have spare catalogues post sale. Ask Steve Hill. It seems the Australian copies still have not arrived. I have advised him. You might look at the rare Melbourne and Sydney sovs and half sovs. several did not sell. I might have to change my profile picture now I have sold the coin.
  5. I should add there is a very rare florin with 4 bands to the crown and an IEB proof in the exceptional silver set. There are of course the 7 and 8 pearl crowns represented.
  6. You are correct the proof in the sets has the bust close to the rim. The many currency dies are wider from the rim. The hooked J variety has as many as 25+ different dies but I have not written them up yet. The majority are being gifted to The Royal Mint but some of the best are in the auction. Mainly ex Peter Davies. Of course the IEB is in the sale as well. Some of the finest could easily be taken for proof but Sovereign Rarities are very particular to not overstate any of the coins. At least everyone can make up their own mind. My 1887 "Proof " penny and halfpenny did not pass muster though they were bought as proof and have mirror finish. They were graded MS 64. The silver is possible to find in wonderful proof like finish so it rather depends if you are a buyer or a seller how you grade it. I believe I had a hooked J proof.
  7. Yes a real cracker PF64 ex Heritage 3/8/2017 lot 30320 sold $10,575 + p&p + 5% tax + £25 fee to collect the tax.
  8. I certainly have not forgotten the coin. There are still only 3 known to me with the very wide 7. There are also a few less than 10 of the wide 7 variety. All will be clear I hope when the 1887 collection goes online for 23rd. Sep.
  9. Nerd indeed! You are paying for the beer Rob. I must admit talking about the die varieties of the 1887 sixpence has often put grandchildren to sleep. There are many unique pieces in the collection including varieties of the 14 pearl sovereign, some patterns by Lauer, and J R Thomas. Plenty of proof varieties that just are not listed anywhere and so many crowns with different rim sizes. OK I will accept slightly off the spectrum but that is what research is all about. This one is unlisted
  10. I understood that unpublished research could be posted on the forum but have lost how to do it or how to access other peoples posts. I am nearing the end of my research days and would like to make information available. How do I do it?
  11. I have seen this on coins in my collection that have been in cases with particular foam in the lining and also on a silver tea pot that was exposed to sulfurous coal fires.
  12. 46 is the only one known to me. Even the "proof" has 46. I have seen the Royal Mint collection but don't recall one there either.
  13. I have noticed the pips on the radio, the time on my phone and the clock on ebay are all different. The computer is about 3 seconds behind and I put this down to some electronic lag. I think ebay allows several pre electronically generated bids to unravel after the final time. You can check by looking at the bids button to see what time each bid was made.
