  1. I met my wife in Mr Smiths nightclub in 1989. This was in Warrington though so perhaps just a name coincidence.
  2. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/578689/1654-french-coin http://www.ebay.fr/itm/GUENINE-1654-LOUIS-XIV-FRENCH-HISTORIC-TOKEN-MEDAL-MEDAILLE-JETON-ROYAL-/310931552090
  3. Lots of people know nothing about coins at all and interpret media information in all sorts of bizarre ways. I find the best way is to just say no I'm afraid it's not worth anything, that way it will stick in the thread and be found by future potential posers of the same question saving everyones time. I just stick to the old favourite when I'm called, several times a day, if it came from change then it will never be worth more than face value. Not always totally true but close enough. Luv from Dave
  4. Well that was easy enough! Nothing to see on the obverse. Weight exactly as a Groat 1.90gms. Diameter would be exactly the same but as copper is softer than silver it has deformed by the strike slightly. Finally it's not an exact match to the groat or to anything else I've seen, ie Ionian Islands. PS it's1832 not 1838
  5. Now then let's have a go at this image upload I've heard so much about
  6. No not me matey, I'm Cheshire born and bred. I was an online gamer when it first started, TFC, and Flash was my tag. I'll get some images of the groat tomorrow, thanks.
  7. As the title says, does this ring a bell with anybody or is it just a fantasy piece of tat. There are some differences in that Britannia is bigger and no beading. I know I should put up a pic but thought I would sound it out first as it seems sort of familiar to me and may have been in Peck, which I've temporarily lost. Luv Dave.
  8. Don't rely on the iron mask too heavily until you're really familiar with the machine. It was the only discrimination I used but it's a very fine line as it will also mask small silver and other interesting signals as well if you don't get it absolutely precisely right. Also weather conditions, ground type and proximity to overhead power lines all affect how iron mask gives or doesn't give a signal. At least on the Explorer anyway. Some times you're actually listening for a variation in the type of non audible signal.
  9. Nice one - the Explorer II is or was the perfect machine. I started out with the XS around 2000 then bought the II when it first came out. Only got about 2 years of detecting with it until I had to stop but bloody ell it's a good machine if you get the settings right. I found some good stuff too and thankfully I still have everything down to the last button. I think the problem with the hobby is that most people start out with a cheap machine and then get sick of never finding anything or always digging iron. Always buy the most expensive detector you can and in the case of the Explorer II if you haven't made your money back (find value) in a month give it up cos' you're rubbish! Dave
  10. For a while I was buying in Wreath Crowns etc from China and selling them as copies on Ebay. To comply totally with regulations I had a custom handstamp made reading "Copy" this was hammered deeply into both sides. I actually thought I was doing some good and highlighting the problem but ebay received complaints regarding my listings so they shut them down.
  11. I wouldn't be shocked by that. The criteria for the BNTA whilst low in number are rather difficult to fill, ie you have to be no financial threat whatsoever to anyone who's related to the lady that deals with your application.
  12. IMO it's been through a washing machine and rescued after some time in the filter. Seen many like this.
  13. undated as in totally without date or with the date on the obverse and not the reverse?
  14. I've been offered these several times by the 10's of kilos. It seems hoards are regular finds in the countries of origin although all I have seen pictures of have been in poor condition so as well as being not medieval or British and of very low value I'd say they've all been seriously cleaned. Luv Dave
  15. I make a point of reporting every Chinese fake on eBay I see. These are primarily the things with badly worded titles from sellers with very few feedback and are predominantly copies of Chinese coins or Trade Dollars. I am starting to note a decline in listing numbers so if everyone did it.....
  16. What a truly horrible man - him and Johnson, supported by the pathetic weakness of Cameron and Corbyn have ravaged this country. Am I the only one with a mortgage and can anyone tell me that I will definitely be in the house we intended to die in this time next year. This time last week it was pretty much a certainty but not now. I don't mean die this time next year in the house, I'm only 40 ish :-)
  17. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/131215 I know this has been posted already. In my opinion this is our only slight chance.
  18. Lets be honest here folks, the op on this particular bit got his wrists slapped for constantly having a go at this particular lady a few months ago - her partner was dying from cancer. Nice to see he's keeping tabs for us. As to what's really going on I don't care and am not getting involved this time although it definitely does appear a bit dodgy. Hope you managed to pick all your toys up - AGAIN!!!!!!
  19. Hiya, Possibly hand cut curtain weights, my Grandma used to use similar shaped bits of lead.
  20. Not really my area but the size comparison picture gives the impression of a casting ridge running along the edge? Perhaps it's just the angle but if it does have a ridge then it's a copy.
  21. Looks very similar to the brass watch fobs that were popular around this time. There is normally a loop at the top for suspension but it's not uncommon to see them filed off.
  22. Well if you feel that way debate with yourself then.
  23. Get out of it, that's most definitely a knob. For a start it doesn't look anything like the image you posted and two it's a knob. I've dehorned cows myself plenty of times and you would not fit the point of anything in that tiny thing. Perhaps they were designed for Badger horns? Also what 18th/19th century farmer is going to pay to either produce or purchase those when he could just as easily cut the horn off. It would be quicker and definitely easier. Not meaning to sound negative and enjoying the discussion but I have always said that the PAS is not fit for purpose. That said I'm definitely going to have a look through my knob box tonight - ooooeerrr!
