  1. It's a recognised variety for those of us who like such things, very rare, a specimen (graded as Fine and said to be finest known) sold for £700 here James Workman sale My example cost 45p on Ebay, which is why it's worth looking hard at the crap for certain dates David
  2. here
  3. super 1918KN Classic British Coins again This guy really can find the goodies!! First time I've seen the bird's foot in top grade, suspect it won't finish at 99p David
  4. I'm the same, the only windows in my house face due east and due west. I'm getting reasonable results from my scanner, great for variety checking but my images are definitely flat . Roll on Summer, for good light, Now I've virtually retired I can give my copystand a try out with the digital camera David
  5. Neat! I must try that
  6. My cassette of the Hobbit always evoked the message "Bad block at 6F - rewind tape" , tnen another 10 minute wait Best machine I ever had was my Archimedes, but add ons were just too expensive Back in 1986 I bought a 286 Tandon AT for work for £1000, plus another £1000 for a 100MB hard disk. We marvelled at it saying "We'll never fill that!" David
  7. Don't know what lighting he's using, or whether he has the colour temperature on his camera mis-set; but if you turn down the magenta in his pictures, they don't look bad
  8. 20p!!!
  9. There was rampant inflation at the time, many blamed decimalisation, but figures show inflation was lower in the period post February than during the preceding period. Folk in Europe blamed the introduction of the Euro for rising prices. Don't know whether the figures backed this up, or it was again a way of expressing annoyence at the change David
  10. Ditto! I used to borrow 10/- off my Mum if I was going out for the night David
  11. Wow! Is it really that long ago. I was in Oxford then, and I remember deliberately getting the bus the bus to work (it was only 3 stops and I usually walked) so that I could get some of the new coins in my change. I also seem to recall that Lsd disappeared incredibly quickly I find youngsters gobsmacked at just how large pennies and halfcrowns were
  12. Euro coins a bit confusing but lots of info including die varieties
  13. Spanish coins 1474 to 1868 in Spanish but useful
  14. Portuguese coins nice site
  15. Decimalisation??
  16. You've got it wrong (as does most of the country) I'm so glad someone else defends the 'leopard' truth Methinks no-one in England will ever get it right now, after that "Three Lions On My Shirt" nonsense, grrrr. They are three leopards en passant heradically speaking, as opposed to the Scottish Lion rampant (or is it guardant? Does anyone care?) Mind you, if I met a hungry big cat, I wouldn't stop too long to check out if it was a leopard or a lion Heraldic English is arcane, seems lions and leopards are interchangeable lions/leopards
  17. For those of you that collect world coins, this looks a pretty good deal compared with the cost of the books Ultimate Standard Catalog of World Coins 1601-Present 5-CD Bundle $99.99
  18. I upload my pictures to photobucket then paste the IMG code here. the image code looks something like this Hope this helps David
  19. No. They are all on Ebay
  20. Yes, proofs are nice - I thought as a schoolboy I would NEVER be able to afford a proof, and I remember some years later buying a 1950S proof shilling and feeling ridiculously pleased with myself! It's really frustrating, but whenever people here post links to a Spink Auctions coin, the link just takes me to their home page, not the coin itself. If it takes you to the Spink home page when you click on the link -- upon returning to the forum post -- try clicking on the link a second time. Oh, that works!! What strange voodoo is this ... ? Very strange I agree, but a vary useful tip, thank you
  21. Just got a 2010 2p in change today, anyone else spotted this year's coins yet, they normally seem to be released for the Xmas tradind
  22. Don't worry. Not everyone collects gold, I don't have any. Nor me, I also have very few silver coins, Copper, bronze, brass etc in abundance David
  23. I agree! I also buy prefer a holed coin in good nick to one with heavy wear, heavy cleaning I hate David
  24. As my grandmother used to say "I'm as old as my tongue, and a little bit older than my teeth" Don't think I can beat 13 David (OAP)
