Re early European copper, an answer from Tibor on the PCGS Forum In 2007 Robert Levinson published his book on this topic and it advanced the known knowledge of this area of numismatics by light years. When a non- collector asks a collector about their coins they involve "what's the date" and/or "what's it worth". Since I am not of Bill Gates wealth I collect moderately priced coins in this area. At this point in time I am unable to post pics. To answer davidrj questions at this point in time there are three different known copper coins with dates before 1500. They are as follows: 1481 Brabant Lev.II-58 R (21-50 known per Levinson) 1489 Flanders Lev.II-120 R !494 Liege Lev.II-134 R-2 (11-20 known per Levinson)

Yes, true for a European dated copper - I wonder what the earliest is? Does anyone here have a copy of the book on early dated coins? Lots of copper amongst the ancient stuff, the Moslem world & India, but copper seems to go out of fashion in Europe, gold & silver for those that mattered, and billon for the hoi poloi Earliest "European" I can find are the Hungarian coins of Bella III 1176-96 - nice coins very Byzantine and sadly undated - they are commonly dug up in decent condition apparently (must have different soil to us), I think I want one for my "penny" collection

Thanks, new info for me, I have 2 1897 but haven't yet checked them for die differences, I only noticed the "Spink" & MB after I'd scanned them for the post above, they've been sitting in my oddments box for years

Still sorting my miscellaneous box - another "penny", brass 30.3mm, 6g Bath Society, No. 6, Pierrepont-Place, for the investigation and relief of occasional distress, encouragement of industry, and supression of vagrants, street-beggars, and impostors, instituted January 1805, under the sanction of the mayor and corporation of Bath, and the justices acting in Bath and its vicinity I'm assuming it's a token for a meal or a bed for the night. Can't find any reference to this coin on Google, so don't know whether the counterstamped S is contemporay or not

This is a very complicated series, difficult to see from your photo, but it is possibly 7/5 A/R, the edge markings you describe are normal for this series, weights vary greatly Here's a 7/5 Coq/Corne lots of images here (nb click numbers in right hand column) and If you can handle some basic French go to the Amis Du Franc Click on "site Dupre" - hundreds of images submitted by members and if you register you have access to the expert system being used to try and identify all the different die varieties in use for the 1c, 5c, decime & 5 francs L'an 4 to L'an 12

I was originally critical of the Kitchener coin, for all the reasons we've debated above. However if this is to be the first of a series, with darker images to follow, then maybe it is OK It's historically accurate to depict the early euphoria - "a great adventure", "it will be over by Xmas", the "Pals Volunteers" etc, so maybe the jury is still out on this one

We don't appear to have a specific area for exonumia - so I thought I would start a thread here Tourist Pennies sold to kids in gift shops at museums etc The top two are honest straight forward souvenirs and are obviously from the same manufacturer ( does H refer to the Birmingham Mint??) Both are 30.2mm diameter, the 1987 Ironbridge weighs 8.96g, and Llechwedd 9.2g The other two are more interesting The 1901 appears to be an electrotype, seam clearly visible on the edge, 30.5mm , 6.33g The 1887 is copper washed white metal, 29.1mm, 4.6g and is marked "COPY" One wonders why? Old pennies are available by the bucketload for buttons, and the kids could take home a bit of real history
